Depuis l'enfance dans les Alpes valaisannes jusqu'à l'exploration des plus hautes montagnes de la terre, ce livre retrace les grands moments d'une vie vécue sous le signe de la passio…n et de l'amitié. Dans les années 50, Jean s'initie à l'escalade avec son frère aîné Daniel, sur les hauteurs du val Ferret, puis dans les grandes voies du massif du Mont-Blanc. Un caractère déterminé, une énergie hors du commun ont tôt fait de révéler sa vocation. Il sera guide. Mais le massif alpin devient vite trop étroit pour cet esprit nomade. Le jeune homme part au Canada découvrir cette nouvelle dimension à laquelle il aspire : des étendues immenses. Parcourant le continent américain de l'Alaska à l'Argentine, il gravit plusieurs sommets mythiques, dont le McKinley et le Fitz Roy. Ces premières expéditions l'encouragent à aller toujours plus loin, plus haut. L'Himalaya l'appelle. Une première ascension au Makalu lui permet d'atteindre et de dépasser l'altitude fatidique des 8000 mètres. Dans cette zone hostile, inhumaine, où la raréfaction de l'oxygène oblige l'alpiniste à repousser ses limites, Jean Troillet dit qu'il se sent " près des dieux ". Aujourd'hui, à plus de cinquante ans, c'est un homme humble et souriant qui raconte cette odyssée en quête d'absolu. La chute sur l'Annapurna, la nouvelle voie ouverte au Dhaulagiri, l'ascension exemplaire de l'Everest sont quelques-unes des expériences qui ont contribué à faire du guide valaisan l'un des meilleurs alpinistes de sa génération. Récemment, en mai 2001, la traversée du Groenland avec ses compagnons Erhard Loretan et Mike Horn est venue enrichir son palmarès d'aventurier tenace. La terre est tellement vaste, il y a tellement d'émotions à découvrir. Pour rien au monde Jean ne voudrait avoir vécu dans la peau d'un autre. Jean Troillet a réuni les plus belles photographies de sa collection, des images rapportées de ses nombreuses expéditions dans les régions sauvages, des paysages spectaculaires, des visions rares aussi, où l'être accède aux confins du monde vivant, à des altitudes vertigineuses, dans la glace et le vent.
