Ce mémoire de Trousseau et Belloc occupe les pages 1 à 312 de ce volume ; il est illustré de neuf planches. Le "Traité pratique de la phtisie laryngée, de la laryngite chronique, et des maladies de la voix" rédigé un an plus tard constituera la deuxième édition de ce mémoire, augmentée de nouvelles observations. Le mémoire proposé ici comporte la première description complète de la tuberculose laryngée et surtout traite pour la première fois de l'ensemble des affections chroniques du larynx, le mot phtisie signifiant "consomption" comme le précise les auteurs. Il peut donc être considéré comme le premier ouvrage de laryngologie. Les auteurs distinguent quatre types de "phtisies laryngées" : simple, syphilitique, cancéreuse et tuberculeuse. Cette classification a le mérite de poser le problème du diagnostic différentiel, même si l'étiologie de certaines observations reste confuse ou imprécise.
