Illustrations in b/w (6 plates) by Clyde O. De Land. Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1900, 1st edition. Additional two-sided plate advertisement in the back of additional titles by the author. Decorative hardcover with gilt stamping and design, front cover picture includes color of picture of Washington and a scout. Overall condition is Very Good. Cover is clean and crisp with minimal wear. Mild age toning to page edges. Interior is clean, bright and unmarked. A very nice, solid copy! This is a novel for young readers set during the Revolutionary War in the United States. It follows the adventures of espionage of young characters who act as scouts for General George Washington.

This VG- book has a slight lean and a modest amount of general soiling. Front corners and lower rear corner are bumped with fraying at the bottom two; there are no edge dings. Head and heel of the spine are lightly bumped, with slight fraying at the heel; spine is somewhat darkened and worn from handling but the gold lettering and emblem are nicely preserved. Front panel illustration shows some wear but is still quite attractive. The interior is completely free of writing, stray marks, stains and page damage. Paper is mildly toned and a bit stiff but still very flexible. Hinges are strong and not damaged in any way; frontis + 5 is intact.

Except for several personalizing additions--a small personal library sheet on the front paste down and a penciled 1903 inscription on the FFEP (see photo), as well as a personal library stamp preceding the half-title page and an inked name on the rear paste down (Willard Avery really wanted people to know whose book this was!)--the interior is completely free of writing, stray marks, stains and page damage. Paper is mildly toned and a bit stiff but still very flexible. Hinges are strong and not damaged in any way; frontis + 5 is intact.

Spine is nicely rounded the black lettering and series title are nicely preserved. Front panel illustration shows slight wear and is still quite attractive; it has what looks like a thin crease starting at the left toe of the scout and going to the horse's left nostril--it is merely a surface aberration, a manufacturing error. Except for mild browning of the front and rear paste downs from some early book cover (see photo), the interior is completely free of writing, stray marks, stains and page damage. Paper is mildly toned and very flexible. Hinges are strong and not damaged in any way; frontis + 3 is intact.
