Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. First Edition. Local photographer's series of 34 colour photographs of Melbourne's inner city suburb Fitzroy, with adjacent descriptive text. Unique local perspective with several interesting architectural shots, plus five vintage b&w photographs (courtesy State Library of Victoria, The Melbourne Tim…es, & City of Fitzroy). Includes a brief chronicle, plus some facts about Fitzroy. From the foreword: "The intention of this book is not to be an historical chronicle of Fitzroy or simply a list of sightseeing highlights - its aim is to make people curious about their suburb, to want to discover their own environment and to develop a feeling for the past and the present in their neighborhood. It also intends to show visitors that there is more behind the first impression. So the choice and order of the pictures is as arbitrary as the different impressions you would gain during any unhurried stroll through Fitzroy with no particular destination. Walking through Fitzroy on a quiet Sunday morning you will still discover back lanes where you can detect a trace of the bygone atmosphere of gold rush days. Just as suddenly you will find yourself in little alleys where flaming bougainvilleas growing over dilapidated fences make you feel as though you are in a village somewhere on the Mediterranean. A few steps further you cross tree-lined streets endeavouring to look like European boulevards, and, like ancient castles, old and proud buildings on main thoroughfares hinting at sagas of former glorious days. The pubs and hotels whisper different stories from a time when Fitzroy was a gateway to the city. And of course, the former workers' cottages - all too familiar, as they are, with all aspects of life: hard and good times, and all the facets of worry and joy - some of them destined to keep their stories silent forever. Around the corner an old factory brick wall is sprayed with colorful graffiti, looking like an exhibit in a modern art gallery. And then at last you meet the whole world in one street. Much has been written about Brunswick Street - and it could well be true there are not many places on this earth where our world comes so closely and so peacefully together". Printed in Brunswick, Victoria. Bound in publisher's original laminated pictorial boards. A LIKE NEW very nice clean tight solid hardcover copy. 47pp. Scarce.
