A monumental scholarly edition of the seventeenth-century catalogue of the library of the Jesuit College at Braniewo (Braunsberg), one of the most important intellectual centres of the Polish-Lithuan…ian Commonwealth, preserving the record of a collection removed to Sweden during the Polish-Swedish wars. In 1626 Braniewo was captured by the forces of King Gustav II Adolf, who ordered the transfer of the Jesuit library to the recently founded University Library at Uppsala, where the books remain today as one of the most significant collections of Polish provenance outside Poland. The edition was prepared from the unpublished work of the linguist and bibliographer Józef Trypućko (1910-1983), who discovered the manuscript catalogue while researching Polonica vetera Upsaliensia. Although his project remained unfinished at his death, it was completed and published through the joint efforts of the National Library of Poland and Uppsala University Library. The three volumes reproduce and analyse the historical catalogue in full. Volume I contains editorial introductions, historical essays on the Braniewo collection and its transfer to Sweden, together with catalogues of the manuscripts (63 entries) and incunabula (340 entries). Volume II comprises the catalogue of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century printed books, describing 2,274 editions arranged according to the original catalogue while identifying modern bibliographical references and surviving copies. Volume III provides comprehensive indexes of authors, titles, printers, places of publication, and provenances, together with sixteen plates illustrating selected manuscripts, early printed books, bindings, ownership inscriptions, and pages from the original catalogue. Beyond its value as a reconstruction of one of the most important Jesuit libraries of early modern Europe, the work constitutes an indispensable source for the history of education, scholarship, and book collecting in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, as well as for the study of war booty and the dispersal of cultural heritage during the seventeenth century. An essential reference for historians of libraries, Jesuit studies, provenance research, and early printed books.
