This copy is smyth sewn. Smyth sewing is a method of bookbinding where groups of folded pages (referred to as signatures) are stitched together using binder thread. Each folded signature is sewn together individually with multiple stitches and then joined with other signatures to create the complete book block. This is the traditional and best method of bookbinding.

Catalog published in conjunction with a traveling exhibition organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and curated by Tseng Yu-ho Ecke. The exhibition was on view at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Nelson Gallery - Atkins Museum, Kansas City, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Preface by PMA Director Evan H. Turner; introductory essay on the aesthetics and philosophy of Chinese calligraphy. Major works are drawn from museum and private collections, including the Field Museum of Natural History, the National Central Museum (Taipei), and collectors such as John M.
