New York: Izdanie M. E. Tsetlin [Published by Maria Tsetlina], 1953. Second edition. 23,5 ? 15,5 cm. 398, [2] pp. Publisher's slate-blue cloth with gilt lettering on the spine, designed by Alexandra Pregel (née Avxentieva). A sweeping narrative history of "The Mighty Handful" or "The Mighty Five" (Moguchaia kuchka)-the influential 19th-century circle of Russian nationalist composers comprising Mily Balakirev, César Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Alexander Borodin-written by Mikhail Tsetlin (1851-1945), the prominent Russian émigré poet, literary critic, philanthropist, and founder of Novyi Zhurnal. Blending biographical rigor with compelling narrative prose, Tsetlin traces the group's origins under the ideological guidance of critic Vladimir Stasov and composer Mikhail Glinka, detailing the creation of landmark Russian operas like Boris Godunov, the composers' personal relationships, and the broader 19th-century musical renaissance. Published posthumously in New York by his widow, Maria Eduardovna Tsetlina, this expanded second edition features cover and binding typography designed by Russian émigré artist Alexandra Pregel (A. N. Pregel, 1894-1984). …
