First edition. Printed on handmade paper. In original blind wrappers, and illustrated hard paper, with tyrský's designs on front and rear panels. Unstapled as customary for Czech books of the era. 15, [1] pp. Jind?ich tyrský's two surrealist collages on the cover of this scarce privately printed Czech essay on psychoanalysis. The reproductions on the wrappers, two artworks by Jind?ich tyrský (18991942), the Dev?tsil-member, Czech surrealist artist, are from his erotic cycle "St?hovací kabinet" ("The portable cabinet," 1934). tyrský is also responsible for the overall typographical design of the booklet. Bilance psychoanalysy is Bohuslav Brouk's (19121978, ), an impassioned defense of the psychoanalytic principle in the arts, which denigrates a shallow and cheapened "Freudianism" practiced by greedy psychologists. Published as a private gift to friends and not for sale. Exceedingly scarce in the trade, especially in such good condition. KVK, OCLC show the copies at the Czech and the French national libraries, Getty, NYPL, and Yale, as well as a rebound copy at Chicago. . Pages untrimmed. Cover slightly dented at extremities. Prague: Jan Fromek, 1927. Octavo (17.5 × 11 cm). Original blind orange wrappers with photo-illustrated dust-jacket by ?tyrský and Toyen; 802 pp. With fourteen plans and twenty-two black-and-white photos. Dust jacket glued at spine (as issued?). Slightly discolored and foxed; still good or better. Scarce guidebook to Paris of the 1920s which, aside from practical information for travelers, provided such information as the addresses of poets and artists and their studios, Paris nightlife and "Czech Paris" with its numerous writers and artists then living in French exile, an overview of French theatre, film, music, ballet and other artforms, as well as introductions to a wide range of restaurants. It also contains a complete list of Paris movie theatres and art-related periodicals and newspapers. An essential record of the perception of the French capital by French intellectuals, so crucial to the development of Czech surrealism and other French-inspired tendencies. Prague: Aventinská mansarda (printed by J. Rokyta), 1930. Octavo (23 × 15.5 cm). Bifolium, printed to recto and verso, [4] pp. First and second page with reproductions of a painting by Toyen and a watercolor by ?tyrský. Old horizontal crease; else about very good. Rare catalog for an early exhibition of paintings and drawings by Czech surrealists Jind?ich ?tyrský and Toyen held at the Aventine Mansard exhibition space in Prague. Toyen showed eighteen works dated to 1928 and 1929; ?tyrský exhibited fifty works including drawings and watercolors, including works for major publications, such as Vít?zslav Nezval's "Jewish Cemetery" (1923). Most works were offered for sale, with retail prices. With an essay by Nezval titled "Lístek do katalogu" (Catalog entry) by Nezval, which offers a detailed attempt to characterize and contrast the work of the two artists. Earlier works by the pair had been shown in Brno in 1924 as part of a Dev?tsil group exhibition. The present exhibition may be the first to showcase their mature Surrealist work after their prolonged stay in Paris, from which they returned in 1928. Toyen (the pseudonym of Marie ?erminová) was one of the most accomplished artists of the Czech avant-garde, an early member of the Dev?tsil group and long-time collaborator of Jind?ich ?tyrský. She is best known for her surrealist, often highly erotic, work as an illustrator. Toyen also experimented with fluid gender roles, alternating male and female attire, and preferring a gender-neutral pseudonym and the masculine singular form in spoken Czech. One of the items exhibited in the present show was Toyen's "?ero v pralese" (Twilight in the forest, 1929), which resurfaced in 2017 and became one of the most expensive Czech paintings sold at auction. The Aventine Mansard was a small exhibition space and bookshop by the Aventinum publishing house, active in 1927-1931. As of October 2025, not in KVK, OCLC.…
