In "Genera Palmarum," the morphology, anatomy, ecology and distribution, fossil record and evolution of the palms are discussed as essential background to the classification. The second and larger part of the book is devoted to accounts of the 200 genera of palms that are recognized. Each genus is described in detail, accompanied by illustrations by Marion Ruff Sheehan. The relationships of each genus are indicated or suggested, and all the genera are arranged in a formal hierarchy.
