Based on the 1978 book "Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo" ("We Children from Zoo Station") by Kai Hermann and Horst Rieck, in turn based on the sordid experiences of teenage runaway and heroin addict Christiane Vera Feischerinow. The Bowie performance used in the film actually took place in New York City, intercut with audience footage taken from an AC/DC concert in Germany.
