Condizione: New. 16x24 cm. The book offers a focused examination of the khirqa, the Sufi cloak, as a central component in the historical articulation of spiritual transmission within the Islamic tradition. While often referenced in passing in broader studies of Sufism, the khirqa remains underexamined as a discrete subject of inquiry. This work aims to fill that gap by investigating the historical, symbolic, and institutional dimensions of the practice across a range of textual and ritual contexts. Drawing on classical Sufi sources and manuscript materials the study traces the development of the khirqa from early references to its more formalized treatment in the writings of figures such as Ibn ?Arab?, al-Suy???, and al-Kush?sh? It considers both the internal Sufi perspectives on the significance of the khirqa, and the broader Islamic discourses that have engaged with or contested its meaning and function. By situating the khirqa within both its historical specificity and its symbolic reach, this study offers a detailed and critical contribution to the understanding of Sufi pedagogy, ritual authority, and the transmission of knowledge in Islamic intellectual history. Condizione: New. In Suhraward?'s Criticism of the Philosophy of Ibn S?n?, Tahir Uluc conducts an epistemological discussion on the relation between philosophy and mysticism. In this context, he aims to go beyond the common opinion, which assumes that in Islamic thought, philosophy depends mostly on rational means in its quest for truth, theology rests primarily on revelation and Sufism on mystical experience and vision. Throughout his study, he investigates the following question: Are the legitimate domains of operation of philosophy and mysticism as clearly distinguished from each other as this assumption suggests, or do they share a common domain? In answering this question, he suggests that Suhraward?'s intention by this criticism is not to eradicate speculative philosophy in general and Peripateticism in particular, unlike the case in Ghaz?l?, but to transform it into a theoretical basis upon which to build his own Illuminative (Ishr?q?) system. In fact, Suhraward? clarifies that one cannot understand the ?ikmat al-Ishr?q, in which he provides a full exposition of his overall philosophical project unless one is well versed in the Peripatetic philosophy. In this perspective, Uluc demonstrates how the criticism of Peripateticism is an essential and integral part of Suhraward?'s endeavor to build a theoretical basis for his Illuminative philosophy, which depends primarily on mystical experience and vision. Accordingly, this book has a twofold purpose. First, it examines from what epistemological point of view Suhraward? finds the Peripatetic philosophy inadequate and on which principles he criticizes it. Secondly, it presents an in-depth analysis of how Suhraward?, who regards himself as a philosopher and his endeavor as philosophical, transforms the Peripatetic philosophy into an instrument and prelude that would serve the Illuminative philosophy. Condizione: New. Tahir Uluc's study offers a fresh perspective on Ab? Man??r al-M?tur?d?, shedding light on his engagement with the origins of the universe and his contributions to debates that have often been eclipsed by the works of later figures like al-Ghaz?l? This book highlights M?tur?d?'s thoughtful critiques of philosophical doctrines, including atheistic pre-eternalism, Aristotelian hylomorphism, and Neoplatonic emanationist cosmologies. Uluc carefully examines these critiques within the framework of M?tur?d?'s theistic and creationist worldview, showing how he addressed and challenged established philosophical concepts of his time. By situating M?tur?d?'s contributions in the broader context of Islamic intellectual history, Uluc not only emphasizes the significance of his ideas but also encourages a reevaluation of his place in the tradition. This study provides an insightful resource for those interested in the intersection of Islamic theology and philosophy, particularly in debates on creation and the nature of existence.
