The Ciro-flex was a series of 6x6 TLRs made by the American manufacturer Ciro beginning circa 1941. All share a strong resemblance, with uncoupled red window film advance and Wollensak lenses & shutters. By using a slightly longer-than-normal 85mm focal length, sharpness in the corners of the 2¼×2¼-inch image remained adequate even with a less-expensive triplet lens design. The earliest model A's were built in Detroit, Michigan; and "ciro-flex" appears uncapitalized on the nameplate. Post-WWII production resumed with the models B ( with an Alphax shutter) and C (Rapax shutter). By 1947 the company had relocated to Delaware, Ohio. While text explains operations and effects possible with the Ciro-flex cameras, basic framing and action shot techniques are also emphasized. Last page has a trouble-shooting guide. Bruce Downes (1899-1966), was an American editor, writer, critic, photographer. Associate, photography editor Collier's magazine, 1948-1949. Quarter bound in calf's leather over pebbled cloth, decorated with blind rules. Small folio. Boards are heavily worn, rubbed through on corners, leather on spine faded, rubbed, chipped at head spine, with significant loss at base of spine, some markings. Endpapers soiled, with some occasional, mild smudging and fingering throughout. The first half dozen leaves - fly leaf, frontispiece, title page, presentation page and first couple of pages of text are discoloured, fragile and torn. Several pages have some edge wear, leaf carrying pages 33/34 has a few short tears and a small portion of loss along fore edge. Pages margins mildly and unevenly toned. Gutters cracked between endpapers, binding a little fragile but holding. A magnificent, mid 19th century presentation of birds and animals from across the world, in words and pictures. We rarely offer books in poor condition but this is a valuable, sought after title which is hard to find; this copy would make a good 'gap filler' in a collection until a better copy can be sourced. In turn, Rick Woodward's son, Joseph Hersey Woodward II (1912-1965), a graduate of Phillips Academy and Yale University who was employed by the company in various capacities cumulating with the board of directors, authored this iron industry history in which he examines the development of blast furnaces throughout Alabama's coal region.
