First published in 1924, this is a first 'popular' edition, undated impression, 97th Thousand on title page (probably about 1930), in original yellow, black, red and wood block printed jacket, showing Lawrence on a camel outside probably Aquaba or Dam…ascus. Jacket sadly tatty, with edge wear, chipping and small loss to top and bottom of jacket and spine, area of loss to mid front jacket and spine, front flap largely detached and held together by new film wrapper, some time and fingerprint staining to folds, some spotting to page block, spine faded, small previous owner's name to ffep, not price clipped (price on spine 3/6), internally clean tight and square, overall a vg copy for its age, in a very scarce jacket. It was 1918 in Jerusalem, when the admiring young American scholar and journalist Lowell Thomas (1892-1981), first met T.E. Lawrence. He went on to write this book 'With Lawrence in Arabia', that sparked the Lawrence of Arabia legend and was the basis of the celebrated film starring Peter O'Toole. With brilliant narrative verve, Lowell recounts the exploits of the young British agent who managed to weld disparate and warring Arab tribes into a formidable mobile fighting force, a guerilla army that would defeat the Turks in the Arab Revolt, sealing the fate of the Ottoman Empire in the Middle East during World War I. On a canvas whose background is the fierce, inhospitable desert and in whose foreground stride the Emir Feisal, King Hussein I of the Hedjaz, the British General Allenby, and the strange, hypnotic figure of Lawrence himself, Thomas paints a vivid portrait of the 'modern knight of Arabia'. He shot dramatic footage of Lawrence, then returned to America and began giving public lectures in 1919 on the war in Palestine, 'supported by moving pictures of veiled women, Arabs in their picturesque robes, camels and dashing Bedouin cavalry'. His lectures were very popular and audiences large and he 'took the nation by storm' in the words of one modern biographer. Very scarce with jacket.
