Ebenso wird untersucht, wie sich die Fähigkeiten von Kindern von denen Erwachsener unterscheiden. Diese Aspekte werden in fünf Querschnittsstudien mit Kindern im Vor- und Grundschulalter sowie jungen Erwachsenen beleuchtet. Daneben werden mà gliche Einflüsse des Textverstehens und der Arbeitsgedächtnisleistung auf den Inferenzprozess berücksichtigt und überprüft, ob auditive und audiovisuelle Texte unterschiedlich schnell verarbeitet werden. Wie die Befunde verdeutlichen, werden prädiktive Inferenzen so früh wie mà glich eingespart. Sie spielen jedoch im Sinne dynamischer Simulationen in Situationsmodellen von Kindern im Vorschulalter eine Rolle. Daneben erleichtern Texte mit Zielstrukturen jungen Kindern die Bildung global rückwärtiger Inferenzen. Beim Medienvergleich zeigt sich, dass in einigen Fällen die audiovisuelle Präsentation zu einer schnelleren Verarbeitung der Testreize führt als die auditive. Eine duale Kodierung von Informationen scheint sich damit auch auf die Inferenzbildung vorteilhaft auszuwirken.
