The June, 1948 issue of The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The famous and historic Doomsday Clock - shown on each cover since 1947, two years after the publication's inception - here shows the ti…me to be eight minutes of midnight as of mid-1948. Quarto, illustrated staple-bound wraps, 32 pp. (pages 161 through 192 for the annual volume, pages then being numbered after the fashion of the time). Very Good; sunning at spine edge and a bit at edges (scan); modest amount of age-toning to the inexpensive paper of the contents. A scarce issue for the collector; see all scans. Established in 1945 by biophysicist Eugene Rabinowitch and physicist Hyman Goldsmith in response to a correctly-perceived demand for nuclear information at the time by the general public, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists is without doubt the most historically significant non-technical publication on the subject of "'global security and public policy issues related to the dangers posed by nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, climate change,[2] and emerging technologies and diseases". Hence, over the years, BAS has become a geopolitical instrument, rather than a nuclear watchdog alone. Feature articles in this vintage 1948 issue: Military Censorship; Loyalty Tests; Argonne National Laboratory; Third Report of the UN Atomic Anergy Commission; Speeches of the Condon Dinner; Soviet Control Plan. More, of course; see scan of contents. Contributors include H.H. Goldsmith & Eugene Rabinowitch (Editors); John Lord O'Brian; Farrington Daniels; Andrei A. Gromyko; R.M. Hutchins; H.C. Urey; E.U. Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, complete journal issue in original printed wrappers, of the first detailed account of the discovery of deuterium, or heavy hydrogen, an isotope of hydrogen of twice the atomic weight of normal hydrogen (a brief announcement had appeared in the same journal in January…). "In 1931 Urey discovered a heavy isotope of hydrogen, later named deuterium, with his colleagues Ferdinand Brickwedde and George Murphy, through spectroscopy of the product of fractional distillation of hydrogen near its triple point. The discovery had a significant influence on chemistry, physics, and medicine (first tracer used to study physiological changes in the human body)" (DSB). Deuterium has many technological applications: in the form of heavy water (deuterium oxide) it is used as a moderator in fission reactors; the nuclear fusion of deuterium atoms has been used in thermonuclear weapons; and deuterium enters into all chemical reactions characteristic of ordinary hydrogen, but it reacts more slowly than ordinary hydrogen, leading to its use as a tracer. "The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1934 was awarded to Harold C. Urey for his discovery of heavy hydrogen. Just as Chadwick was in the habit of scanning scientific journals as they arrived in his morning mail, so was the American physical chemist Harold C. Urey at Columbia University. What caught his attention one warm summer day in 1931 was a letter to the editor in The Physical Review by Raymond T. Birge, a professor of astrophysics at Lick Observatory on nearby Mount Hamilton. Birge and Menzel suggested that isotopes of hydrogen might explain an apparent discrepancy in the atomic weight of that element. The atomic weight of hydrogen had been a sore point of contention among scientists for a long time. Its value led Rutherford to propose, some ten years earlier, not only his hypothetical neutron, but also one or more isotopes of hydrogen . . . Urey had . . . spent a year studying at the Niels Bohr Physical Institute in Copenhagen, and had served on the faculty at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. While at Hopkins, he became acquainted with Brickwedde, a graduate student in physics. Urey lost no time in following up on the letter by Birge and Menzel. Teaming up with his colleague George Murphy at Columbia, he soon identified hydrogen and its isotope by spectroscopically observing the Balmer atomic spectrum . . . Modest exposures sufficing with gas from a commercial tank of hydrogen, the experiment seemed too simple! Urey decided not to rush into print, but make doubly sure that the new spectral lines were not impurity lines or ghosts (caused by irregularities in the ruling of the Columbia grating). If we had been brave, muses Murphy, we would have stopped work on that first day and written our paper announcing the discovery of heavy hydrogen . To proceed further, a method of isotopic concentration was needed and fractional distillation of liquid hydrogen seemed a good bet . . . Urey got in touch with Brickwedde, a former student of his then at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, DC, and already an authority on low-temperature studies. Brickwedde gladly agreed to lend a hand, and ship some samples via Railway Express. Unfortunately the Washington liquefier was down for repairs, causing some anxiety at Columbia; others might also be looking for the predicted isotope. But a sample was soon on the way, consisting of a few cubic centimeters of residual liquid evaporated from six liters of liquid hydrogen. To Urey s consternation, the intensity of the spectral lines attributed to heavy hydrogen was too feeble to be sure. More waiting. At last, more samples arrived, evaporated at a lower temperature where the rate at which heavy hydrogen is concentrated should be more rapid. Success! The new lines showed a six- or seven-fold increase in intensity of the Balmer lines of deuterium" (Dahl, Heavy Water and the Wartime Race for Nuclear Energy). Large 8vo. Original printed wrappers.

Aggiungi al carrelloWraps. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. First Edition. 191, [1 blank], 8 pages. 7 x 10 inches. The entire issue of the Physical Review, Vol. 39 #1 (Second Series) January 1, 1932 offered. Publisher's original green printed wrappers. A nice copy with minor browning to the covers at the extremities and some creasing to the re…ar wrapper. Upper spine corner lightly bumped. Rear wrapper and last nine leaves with closed tear at top edge. Wraps. The article offered here, "A Hydrogen Isotope of Mass 2" is found on page 164-5. It announces the discovery of the deuteron, which we now know as deuterium. "Deuterium (symbol D or 2H, also known as heavy hydrogen) is one of two stable isotopes of hydrogen. The nucleus of deuterium, called a deuteron, contains one proton and one neutron, whereas the far more common hydrogen isotope, protium, has no neutron in the nucleus. Deuterium has a natural abundance in Earth's oceans of about one atom in 6420 of hydrogen." (wiki) Deuterium has important applications in nuclear reactors, NMR Spectroscopy, geology, and a myriad of other areas. A further article was published in the April issue which addressed in considerably more detail the concentration of the newly discovered isotope and why that worked. "Soon after deuterium's discovery, Urey and others produced samples of "heavy water" in which the deuterium had been highly concentrated." "Harold Clayton Urey (April 29, 1893 January 5, 1981) was an American physical chemist whose pioneering work on isotopes earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1934 for the discovery of deuterium. He played a significant role in the development of the atom bomb, but may be most prominent for his contribution to theories on the development of organic life from non-living matter. At Johns Hopkins, Urey and Arthur Ruark wrote Atoms, Quanta and Molecules (1930), one of the first English texts on quantum mechanics and its applications to atomic and molecular systems." (wiki) Most often found in bound ex-library volumes, we offer here the original issue of the Physical Review as it was published. See Ezhela, et al, pp 64-65, (Urey 1932) which identifies the article as providing "Evidence for the deuteron".
