Ursinus: August Friedrich U., verdienter Herausgeber einer Sammlung altenglischer und altschottischer Balladen. Geboren am 22. Juni 1754 zu Berlin als der Sohn des Geh. Oberfinanzraths Erhard U. beschäftigte er sich schon auf der Universität Halle, wo er die Rechtswissenschaften studirte, angeregt durch Herder's Abhandlung über Shakespeare, Ossian und die Volkslieder, mit dem Studium der altenglischen Lieder, namentlich der Percy'schen Sammlung, die 1765 erschienen war. Seine ersten eigenen dichterischen Leistungen waren zwei Balladen, die er im Göttinger bezw. Hamburger Musenalmanach von 1776 veröffentlichte. Schon im folgenden Jahre gab er "Balladen und Lieder altenglischer und altschottischer Dichter" heraus, zu denen Chodowiecki eine Zeichnung lieferte, deren Stich Daniel Berger besorgt hatte. Eschenburg lieferte dazu die Uebersetzung zweier Abhandlungen über die alten englischen Minstrels und über die Liederpoesie aus Percy's Reliques und Arkin's Essays on song-writing. Die meisten Balladen sind aus der Percy'schen Sammlung entlehnt und die Uebersetzungen von Herder, Löwe, Crome, Campe, Joh. Martin Miller, Eschenburg und A. Julius Laur benutzt. U. selbst gab die Uebersetzung von drei Balladen. Auch für die von Gedike und Biester herausgegebene Berlinische Monatsschrift lieferte er einige Gedichte, deren Werth aber nicht groß ist. ? U. wurde, nachdem er mehrere Jahre dem Grafen von Möllendorf als Secretär gedient hatte, 1781 geheimer expedirender Secretär beim Generaldirectorium in Berlin, 1786 Kriegsrath und 1798 geh.
