Condizione: new. Amsterdam : Holland University Press, 1975. Paperback. x,215 pp, 4 plates. 23x15 cm. English text. - A study of Matthieu Maty (17181776) and his Journal Britannique, published in The Hague from 1750 to 1755. Maty was a physician, scholar, and journalist of Huguenot origin. His journal presented, in French, news, reviews, and critical assessments of significant publications from the English-speaking world. It thus served an important function as a cultural intermediary between Great Britain and the Continent. Janssens reconstructs Maty's editorial practices, critical judgments, selection of English authors and works, and his role as a cultural intermediary within the international Republic of Letters. She examines how Maty selected, evaluated, and presented English literature to a French-speaking readership. The study therefore goes beyond a conventional history of the journal, addressing instead the question of how an eighteenth-century journalist and critic interpreted a national literature when making it accessible to a foreign audience. Maty founded the Journal Britannique in 1750. Published bimonthly, the journal reached readers not only in the Netherlands and England but also in cities such as Paris, Geneva, Venice, and Rome. It consequently illustrates how the French-language press facilitated the international circulation of English literary and intellectual culture. Maty's career further demonstrates the close interconnections between literature, science, and institutional scholarship. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1751 and subsequently worked at the British Museum, where he became its second Principal Librarian in 1772. Condition : new copy. ISBN 9789030211037. Keywords : LITERARY CRITICISM, Huguenots.

Condizione: new. Amsterdam : APA-Holland University Press, 1990. Paperback. 330 pp, 12 plates. 23x15 cm. (Studies of the Pierre Bayle Institute (SIB), 21). - This study examines the life, intellectual development, and literary oeuvre of the Franco-Swiss Protestant minister, journalist, and writer Jean Des Champs (1707-1767). Central to the volume are his 'Mémoires Secrets', an extensive autobiographical and historical manuscript in which Des Champs intertwines personal experiences with observations on politics, religion, culture, and the intellectual world of the eighteenth century. The study combines biographical research with textual criticism and situates Des Champs within the international Republic of Letters and the culture of the Enlightenment. Furthermore, Janssens-Knorsch analyses the literary, religious, and historical significance of his writings and the ways in which they provide insight into the development of sensibilité (the culture of sensibility) during the eighteenth century. Condition : new copy. ISBN 9789030210313. Keywords : PHILOSOPHY, enlightenment.
