He was recognized for excellence in clinical research. He was appropriately recognized in 2017 as the first recipient of the AAO's lifetime achievement award. Sein Lehrbuch Contemporary Orthodontics, das in 12 Sprachen veröffentlicht wurde, gilt als Standardwerk für zahnmedizinische Fakultäten in aller Welt. Er war Mitautor von Contemporary Treatment of Dentofacial Deformity zusammen mit Dr. Raymond P. White. Jr. und Dr. David M. Sarver sowie ein weiteres Buch über chirurgische kieferorthopädische Behandlung mit Raymond P. White Jr. Er veröffentlichte zahlreiche wissenschaftliche Artikel in Fachzeitschriften mit Peer-Review und mehr als 50 Buchkapitel und eingeladene Beiträge. Er war Kenan Distinguished Professor of Orthodontics an der University of North Carolina und hatte dort von 1975 bis 2001 den Vorsitz inne. Er wurde für seine herausragenden Leistungen in der klinischen Forschung ausgezeichnet. 2017 wurde er als erster Empfänger des AAO-Preises für sein Lebenswerk gewürdigt. Am 30.
