Valentin Magnon [1835-1916] French pyschiatrist, student of Jules Baillarger and Jean Pierre Falret. From 1867 Magnon was associated with the Hospital Ste. Anne. He introduced his colleagues to the concept of of a chronic kind of well circumscribed delusional disorder that went through four stages after a period of incubation: inquietude-hallucinations, persecution, manic-grandeur and dementia. He published a series of articles on it in Le Progres medical and then together with his colleague, Paul Serieux, he described the disorder in a monograph, 'Le delire chronique a evolution symptomatique.' Magnan's creation is an "early description of dementia praecox" though like many French psychiatrists, he detested Kraepelin's term.…
