Extremely rare, unrecorded survival of what is arguably the only self-proclaimed, purely Dadaist magazine published in 20th-cen…tury Latin America. While the historical Latin American avant-gardes of the 1920s (such as Mexican Estridentismo, Brazilian Antropofagia, or Argentine Ultraísmo) absorbed Dadaist influences, they universally rejected its pure nihilism in favor of constructing local '-isms'. The explicit, anachronistic adoption of an orthodox Dadaist ethos and manifesto by Ryan-da in 1960s Buenos Aires constitutes an absolute continental anomaly, elevating this publication from a regional rarity to a cornerstone artifact for the study of the radical underground press in the Americas. This legendary ghost publication stands as a unique, radical experiment in typography, visual poetry, and collage, strictly adhering to the Dadaist ethos while incorporating early visual nods to Pop Art. Conceived by Carlos Rivarola, a tragic and cult figure often regarded as an authentic poète maudit of Argentine literature, alongside Alberto Vaccarezza and Carlos Guillermo Ariet San Juan, the magazine features striking original concrete poetry, surrealist collages, and reproductions of texts by Apollinaire, Antonin Artaud, and Benjamin Péret. According to modern research by Barea and Risso, the publication was historically presented at the Galería Rubio in Buenos Aires, featuring an introduction by Julio Montes de Oca and poetry recitals by Monona Estevez. The physical presentation is strikingly transgressive. The front wrapper features a hand-drawn design with a sun-like motif and the repeated syllable DA cascading down, ending with the handwritten word Absurdo. The interior pages definitively confirm its radical ideological stance, prominently featuring the bold declaration ".aparece PRIMER No. ABSURDO" alongside the manifesto-like statement "para destruir con el absurdo este mundo absurdo." Its visual aesthetic aggressively blends Dadaist typographic chaos with mid-century movements, evidenced by the inclusion of a "POP ART" stamp juxtaposed with abstract line drawings and recurring small woodcut-style vignettes. A text by Ariet San Juan includes the specific internal dating "sobre marzo cruzando un 65," situating the genesis of the literary material slightly earlier than the purported 1966 publication date. The back wrapper displays a chaotic typographic layout with the editor's correspondence address and pricing in local currency, Uruguayan pesos, and French francs. The colophon states a supposed print run of 350 copies, though it is highly probable that only a fraction were ever printed and almost none survived. The item is exceptionally scarce and entirely unrecorded in institutional databases, with no original copies listed in OCLC/WorldCat. Due to its clandestine and highly ephemeral nature, Ryan-da is completely absent from canonical bibliographies of Argentine literary magazines, including the exhaustive works by Lafleur, Provenzano & Alonso, and José M. Otero. Very good overall. An authentic, magnificent surviving copy, enriched by unique, contemporary manuscript marginalia in ink (such as "por la ponderación de los siglos."), cementing its nature as a circulated underground artifact. Shows natural toning to the paper and minor foxing spots to the wrappers, completely consistent with the fragile stock of 1960s underground ephemera. There are no tears, markings (beyond the original annotations), or restorations. A practically unobtainable piece of Latin American literary and art history, making it an essential acquisition for advanced institutional collections focusing on Latin American Avant-Garde, Dadaism, Concrete Poetry, and 1960s counterculture.
