(Included here is his detailed CV, and adverts for two of his works on China and Japan). Dedicated to Maharaja Jam Saheb of Nawanaga, this is the first survey of the present state of wartime cargo traffic on India's west coast, and its routes to other Indian ports, Ceylon, the Persian Gulf (Muscat, Basrah, Kermanshah etc), East Africa (Zanzibar, Mombasa etc) and elsewhere. Based on over a year of on the spot research and interviews, the author packs in a huge amount. An opening chapter on different types of sailing vessel distinguishes Indian and Arabian types with drawings. Arabian types include Baglas, sambooks, booms, Ganjawars. Indian types include those from Cutch-Kathiawar and Sindh, Gujarat, Thana-Ratnaghiri, Malabar, and Tuticorin. The author gives a breakdown of 5300 operational vessels by port. Details include design, construction and traditional decoration, where made, type and cost of materials, tonnage, crew, their character, terms and conditions of employment, distances covered under different conditions, routes, typical cargoes, frequency of accidents, and lifespan. The author draws comparisons between them, finding for example the Arabians to be the "strongest and the most efficient ships on the run" versus those from Kutch-Kathiawar, Sindh, Gujarat, Malabar, Tuticorin, and Jaffina-Madras-Cocanada, and among the longest lived. Subsequent chapters make up a reference manual on how shipping is conducted, covering shipbuilding, captains, crew, chartering, the shipping season, office organisation, traffic and traffic routes, sea-cum-rail traffic, cargo, rates, insurance, banking, claims, maintenance and earnings, sailing vessels vs steamships, government organisation and control, and carrying agencies. Appendices include shipping and insurance terms, tonnage schedule and rules, port and customs formalities, specimen of a sea-cum-rail delivery order, distance tables etc), sea going traffic averages, route system and agents. In his closing chapter, the author argues that this kind of traffic should not just be considered a necessity of wartime, but should continue to operate alongside steamships. The map shows ports along the Indian coast and internal rail routes. The portraits are of the Maharaja, eminent shipowners, builders, traders etc. The adverts are for local shipping, manufacturing and trading firms. The back cover for example features an advert for Vishram Khimji, one of the oldest firms, and route agents to the government of India, who for almost a century had been serving India, China, Siam, Indo-China, Burma and Malaya in the east, to the Persian Gulf, Arabia, Egypt, and the east Africa coast.

The seven appendices are devoted to technical matters, such as "port and customs formalities", tonnage schedules, and coastal distances. There are a number of mentions of traffic with the Gulf and Arabia. Vessels illustrated include an Arabian craft (known in India as "Baglas"), Cutch-Kathiawar and Sind types, a Gujerat batala or dhow, Thana-Ratnagiri types, a Tuticorin lugger, and a Jaffna-Madras-Cocanada barque. The author, K. B. Vaidya, had a long career in both journalism and business, and he was the author of The Naval Defence of India (1949). Octavo.
