Il morire come evento, come atto dello spegnersi, appartiene ancora tutto alla vita, se non alla coscienza; l'angoscia e il coraggio possono sussistere in esso e così pure i segni del dolore. L'angoscia dinanzi al morire, al distacco che è sempre così prossimo e così lontano, è ben diversa dall'orrore della morte, che non si può certo sperimentare nel proprio corpo ma che da sempre è prima evidente nell'altro, divenuto cadavere. Giustamente Cargnello parla appunto della morte e del morire, e giustamente Bloch indaga sulle fonti del possibile coraggio di morte. Se l'animale, infatti, prova in realtà soltanto l'angoscia del morire, l'io umano, rapportandosi coscientemente a se stesso, conosce anche l'angoscia della morte, potendo prevedere e temere il proprio autentico annientamento (Ateismo nel Cristianesimo). Il morire in pace, carico d'anni e sazio della vita, il morire dello stoico, ma anche il morire giustiziato o assassinato, il morire fra atroci tormenti, il morire di fame e di stenti, il morire per caso (nel rogo di un aereo, nel crollo di una stazione, nell'affondare di una nave, in un incidente automobilistico o ferroviario) forse trovano la loro grande antitesi solo nella morte di croce: la morte di Cristo come garanzia della resurrezione. Ma anche in quel trascendere che voglia restare radicalmente umano, cioè senza trascendenza, anche nella versione più terrestre e laica dell'agostiniano e poi blochiano Dies septimus nos ipsi erimus, anche qui il pensiero della morte può esser affrontato con coraggio e fortezza.
