The catalogue of the major monographic exhibition dedicated to Luigi Valadier, which follows and expands on the one held at the Frick Collection in N…ew York in 2018. The most illustrious and gifted exponent of a family of silversmiths from France, Luigi Valadier (17261785) worked for much of the 18th century for popes, princes, and the most aristocratic and wealthy Roman families, until his fame spread throughout Europe, receiving significant commissions from France, England, and Spain. His unparalleled skill in working silver and bronze led him to develop a taste and stylestarting from a lush and decorative Baroque style of predominantly French influence, rocaille or rococo, which then developed into a more restrained and sophisticated language, culminating in neoclassicismthat was absolutely avant-garde, expanding his artistic dimension from that of a great creator of astonishing furnishings to the creator of more ambitious and monumental undertakings. His works paid homage to the great teachings of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, to the devotion towards the monuments of ancient Rome and the venerated statues of antiquity, recomposed in solemn creations such as centerpieces (desers) conceived as true table monuments, candelabras, altars, jewels, table furnishings.
