Il synthétise vingt-cinq ans de recherches sur le site de Doukki Gel et ses environs, du ier millénaire avant J.-C…. au ive siècle de notre ère. Il présente les résultats archéologiques et épigraphiques obtenus sur ce site qui s étend à moins d un kilomètre de la ville antique de Kerma, les replaçant dans le contexte historique des principales périodes concernées : la XXVe dynastie durant laquelle des rois originaires de Napata, près de la IVe cataracte du Nil, ont régné sur l Égypte (721-656 avant J.-C.), la royauté napatéenne (656-270 avant J.-C.) qui a vu leurs successeurs chassés d Égypte développer une culture mixte originale, enfin le royaume méroïtique (270 avant J.-C.-340 après J.-C.), culture encore plus marquée par l Afrique noire. Héritier de la capitale du royaume de Kerma, ce site exceptionnel est à l origine des royaumes soudanais les plus représentatifs de l Antiquité. Ses vestiges archéologiques et épigraphiques, quoique profondément remaniés et bouleversés à maintes reprises au long de plus de mille ans, révèlent l existence, côte à côte, de lieux de cultes inspirés par la tradition égyptienne et par des traditions indigènes, de dispositifs défensifs totalement inconnus ailleurs et conservent un nombre remarquable de jalons chronologiques significatifs pendant une période très mal connue. Les restes de temples successifs de type égyptien comprennent de multiples catégories de reliefs sur pierre, de peintures et de hauts reliefs en mortier. Ils fournissent des témoignages précieux pour lesquels on peut proposer des comparaisons révélatrices sur différents sites contemporains comme Naga, Mouweis ou El-Hassa. Parallèlement, des sanctuaires en briques crues restituent une architecture totalement inconnue jusqu ici dont on peut suivre les transformations sur près d un millénaire. Les comparaisons avec le site voisin de Tabo apportent des informations appréciables, notamment sur le plan architectural et urbanistique. Ce volume inclut plusieurs annexes portant sur les inscriptions méroïtiques, le mobilier et la faune issue d une boucherie. L étude de Claude Rilly sur les quelques inscriptions cursives méroïtiques est révélatrice des débuts de cette écriture qui note la langue kouchite après plusieurs siècles de pratique orale. Elle démontre sans ambiguïté que nous avons là les plus anciens textes permettant de mettre en évidence les premières étapes de la création de cette écriture. L analyse du mobilier archéologique, comparé aux sites majeurs de Kawa et de Napata s est révélée particulièrement riche, notamment pour la période napatéenne. Le travail de Séverine Marchi accroît considérablement notre connaissance du mobilier contemporain de la XXVe dynastie, comme des périodes napatéenne et méroïtique. Des dépendances très bien conservées s étendent à l ouest des temples de type égyptien. De vastes boulanger.
