Aggiungi al carrellounbound. View. Lithograph. Image measures 6" x 3.5". This small view depicts The Old Brewery, a brewery-turned-tenement house, and neighboring buildings in the Five Points neighborhood of Manhattan, as it looked in 1852. Located in the modern-day Lower East Side, Five Points was said to be one of the most dangerous slums in the world in the early to mid 19th century. The Old Brewery building was demolished in December, 1852. This print was published one year later. David Thomas Valentine (1801-1869) served as the Deputy to the Clerk of the Common Council for thirty-seven years and began publishing the "Manual for the Corporation of the City of New York" in 1841. The Manuals were directories of extensive historical and contemporary records of New York that included facts about the City of New York, city history, city council information, and reported on the progress of public works such as Central Park. Popularly called Valentine's Manuals, the texts were richly illustrated with maps, lithographs, and engravings. This view provides a fascinating look at New York City. Aggiungi al carrellounbound. View. Lithograph with original color. Image measures 6" x 8". This beautiful small view features a depiction of the Macombs Dam across the Harlem River in New York City. The bridge, built in 1814, was a true dam built to power a gristmill along the Harlem River. In 1858, the bridge was demolished, following years of civilian complaints regarding limitations on navigability caused by the dam. The complaints culminated in acts of civil disobedience, with a force of 100 men led by Lewis G. Morris breaching the dam and removing parts of it in 1839. Their actions were upheld by the courts, who ruled that New York State did not have jurisdiction to authorize the bridge's construction, as navegable waterways were controlled by the Federal government. By 1861, the bridge and dam were completely removed, and temporarily replaced with the bridge pictured in this print. This bridge was eventually replaced in 1895 with the Macombs Dam Bridge, which continues to operate today. This view was published in the 1862 edition of "Valentine's Manual", a directory of extensive historical and contemporary records of New York. In good condition. Some wear along folds. Tiny rips along edges of fold lines. Aggiungi al carrellounbound. View. Lithograph with original color. Image measures 6" x 8". This beautiful small view features a depiction of the High Bridge across the Harlem River in New York City. It features what is today the Highbridge Park in the foreground with the bridge crossing the Harlem River. Several buildings can be seen on the opposite banks while boats, including a steamboat can be seen in the river. Originally the Aqueduct Bridge, the High Bridge is the oldest bridge in New York City and was a key part of what is now called the "Old Croton Aqueduct". The large tube for the "New Croton Aqueduct" (as it was called at the time) is visible at the top of the bridge during construction. The stone arch bridge built to resemble a Roman aqueduct, carried water across the Harlem River into Manhattan. Designed primarily to support large water pipes, it opened to pedestrians soon after completion in 1848. It quickly became a popular public promenade and a favorite subject for artists and photographers. In the 1970s, the bridge was closed to the public until it reopened to pedestrians and bicycles in 2015. It is today, a popular attraction for both New Yorkers and visitors. This view was published in the 1862 edition of "Valentine's Manual", a directory of extensive historical and contemporary records of New York. In good condition. Some wear along folds.
