Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into a complex legal dispute that unfolded in early 19th-century New York. The story centers on a contested lease agreement between the Van Cortlandts, a prominent landowning family, and a group of mill owners, the Underhills. The book explores the intricate details of the lease, which involved a mill site on the Croton River, including the construction of mills and other buildings, the use of timber, and the rights and responsibilities of both parties. The author meticulously details the legal proceedings, including the original bill of complaint filed by the Underhills in the Court of Chancery, the Van Cortlandts' answer, and the subsequent cross-bill filed by the Van Cortlandts. The book explores the legal intricacies of property ownership, contractual obligations, and the valuation of property in a time of significant economic and industrial change. The dispute also highlights the evolving social and economic landscape of the early American republic, as the Van Cortlandts, representing the old aristocracy, grapple with the rise of entrepreneurialism embodied by the Underhills. The book delves into the tensions between traditional land ownership and the burgeoning industrial economy, offering a fascinating window into the legal and social conflicts of the time. Through its detailed account of this legal case, this book offers a nuanced and engaging exploration of property law, contract law, and the changing dynamics of economic power in early America.
