Van Evrie became notorious during the Civil War and Reconstruction as a defender of Slavery and opponent of civil rights for Negroes, whom he regarded as an inferior race. The Van Evrie firm sponsored an array of Copperhead and anti-Negro, pro-slavery publications. His views aligned well with many in the Democratic Party, which offered itself to voters as "The White Man's Party" during the War and Reconstruction. This Almanac is profusely advertised. It prints essays perfectly expressing the Van Evrie view of American race relations. It reports the "History of the St. Domingo Massacre;" laments "Our Federal System Overthrown," praises President Johnson's veto of "The Reconstruction Bill," opposes Congressional Reconstruction. Aggiungi al carrelloOriginal printed and decorative salmon title wrappers. [2], 80, [10] pp. Stitched, minor wear, Very Good plus. At bottom of front wrapper: "Second Year of Publication." Van Evrie became notorious during the Civil War and Reconstruction as a defender of Slavery and opponent of civil rights for Negroes, whom he regarded as an inferior race. The Van Evrie firm sponsored an array of Copperhead and anti-Negro, pro-slavery publications. His views aligned well with many in the Democratic Party, which offered itself to voters as "The White Man's Party" during the War and Reconstruction. This Almanac, profusely advertised, offers essays perfectly expressing the Van Evrie view of American race relations. "The Right of Suffrage," opposing enfranchisement of Blacks, argues that the Natural Right of suffrage belongs to the white race only. "The Result of the Late Elections" laments the trouncing taken by Johnson Democrats in the midterm elections and the triumph of "the negro party." Other articles-- on Lincoln's "arbitrary and illegal arrests," "Mongrelism," "The Negro Bureau and Civil Rights Bills," "The Proposed Constitutional Amendments" - - also emphasize these themes. Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Good. Four loose weekly issues (four pages each): August 2, 1862; March 14, 1863; May 2, 1863; and one incomplete issue: February 21, 1863 (pp. 1-2 only). Large folios (16¼" x 22½"). The first three complete issues are untrimmed as originally published. Rubbing and toning, scattered short tears, two issues have minor tears at the old folds, good or better overall. *The New York Weekly Caucasian* was published by newspapermen John Van Evrie and Rushmore Horton from Oct. 1861 to Sept. 1863. As stated on page two under the publisher's imprint: "The principles of the Caucasian are the principles of White Men's Liberties, Opposition to Negro Equality, and in favor of an appeal . to restore the Union and the Constitution . It is also devoted to an explanation of the so-called Slavery Question, and stands firmly for White Supremacy, a defense of the rights and welfare of the Producing and Working Classes, now imperiled by the doctrine of Negro equality, high tariffs, paper currency, and excessive taxation." Printed underneath the masthead is a quote from Stephen Douglas: "I hold that this Government was made on the White Basis, by White Men, for the benefit of White Men and their Posterity forever." The paper openly attacked abolitionists, and the Lincoln administration, predicting as early as December, 1861 that Lincoln would end slavery. In Jonathan Wells history of the *Caucasian*, the newspaper's use of the term "White Supremacy" grew after the Emancipation Proclamation to frighten readers with the prospect that their immediate skin color advantage might soon disappear. Included in this cache of three complete issues are two speeches by the anti-abolitionist Ohio representative Clement Vallandigham, who served as the leader of the Copperhead faction of anti-war Democrats during the Civil War, together with a speech by the pro-Confederacy Pennsylvania representative William Reed. Also included is a satirical literary contribution written in vernacular: "The M'Doodle Letters No. XII", and various articles critical of the abolitionists and the Lincoln administration, including "Abolition Civilization in Washington," and "The Natural Order - Subordination of Negroes and Equality of White Men." A scarce cache of loose issues published during the Civil War. A detailed list of all four issues, with condition notes and selected articles, is available.…
