Doch juist aan deze verheugende toestand is…het soms te wijten, dat de lezer door de aanblik van het bos, de bomen wel eens uit het oog verliezen. Ook gebeurde het, dat sommige auteurs sterk de aandacht trokken in België, zonder nochtans voldoende erkenning te vinden in Nederland. Tot deze laatste behoort enigermate Frans van Isacker (geb. 1920). Na De Wereld Verandert (1948), Maar er is een Uitweg (1949), Kortstondige Onthouding (1954) en Posthume Wandeling (1957) is deze aangrijpende Reis naar Ispahan reeds het vijfde boek van deze jonge Mechelse doctor in de rechten, wiens aandacht voortdurend op de condition humaine is toegespitst. Als vele Vlamingen een uitstekend verteller, heeft hij er zich op toegelegd op nauwgezette wijze te verwoorden hoe tot in hun diepste wezen beschadigde intellectuelen de zin van het menselijk bestaan zoeken te ontraadselen, zonder hierbij, wat er ook gebeurde, het geloof in de mogelijkheid van het aardse geluk te verloochenen. Nochtans ken ik weinig literaire werken, die mij zo innig pijn hebben gedaan als De Reis naar Ispahan, waarvan de titel, ontleend aan het beroemde gedicht van P. N. van Eyck, op zichzelf veelzeggend is. Men kan zich op het vlak van de menselijke ervaringen indedaad nauwelijks een pijnlijker contrast voorstellen dan tussen de pril-gelukkige sfeer in het gezag van de architect Pieter Hooft en zijn liefelijke vrouw en het plotselinge, gewelddadige verlies van alles, waarop dit zonnige, inderdaad haast té schone geluk gevestigd was. Maar ondanks alles spreekt uit de laatste bladzijden van het werk een zo diep geloof in het leven, dat men nauwelijks van een pessimistisch boek gewagen kan. Hoe dan ook, Frans van Isacker verzekert zich, voorzover dit nog niet gebeurd was, met deze grote, aangrijpend-menselijke roman van een definitieve plaats in de moderne Nederlandse prozaliteratuur van Noord en Zuid.
