Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. James F. Bell Book Trust and North Central Publishing Company [Published date: 1957]. Paper covers, 12 pp, followed a 4 page facsimile copy of the letter. Translated, with an historical commentary, by Jan O.M. Broek, and a forward by John Parker. In very good condition. Oversized brown paper covers with map illustration running front to back. Light bumping and scuffing to edges of covers with a tiny bit of the color scuffed off along the edges. . Binding tight (staple bound). Pages clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-library. Includes 2 page map of the world by Ortelius 1587, showing Van Noort's route. [Excerpt from Foreword] Olivier Van Noort ranks among the founders of the Dutch East Indian Empire, and the letter he wrote in September 1601 is considered a cornerstone to the subsequent books, pamphlets, and manuscripts relating to the Dutch East Indies in the Bell Collection. In asking Professor Broek to bring the letter into the English language and to enlarge upon the events which prompted Van Noort to write it, we hope to call attention to a significant voyage at the beginning of an era of major importance in the history of East Indian commerce. Professor Broek has maintained the flavor of the early seventeenth-century Dutch language in his translation, and his commentary reveals much about the position of the United Netherlands at that time. In an attempt to permit the reader to see the geography of the world as Van Noort and his compatriots saw it, we include two maps in this publication. The covers are an adaptation of the map of southern South America found in Van Noort?s Description du penible voyage, Amsterdam, 1602, a recent acquisition to the Bell Collection. This map portrays the passage of Van Noort?s fleet through the Straits of Magellan. On pages 6 and 7 Van Noort?s route is traced upon a reproduction of Abraham Ortelius? Typus orbis terrarum. The original is in the Bell Collection copy of Theatrum orbis terrarum, London, 1606.

The expedition, led by Olivier van Noort, was the first to successfully circumnavigate the globe while traveling eastward - against the prevailing winds and currents. The author, who was a participant in the expedition, provides a detailed account of the voyage, including descriptions of the lands they visited, the people they encountered, and the challenges they faced. The book offers a wealth of information about the Age of Exploration, while also providing insights into the cultures and histories of the Americas, Asia, and Africa at the turn of the 17th century. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condizione: Very good. First. First edition. Amsterdam: Joost Hartgerts, 1650. Quarto in 8s (7 7/16" x 6 3/16", 188mm x 157mm). [Full collation available.] With an engraved vignette to title page, six in-text engravings, and woodblock initials and tailpieces. Bound in contemporary stabbed red floral paste-paper wrappers. Presented in a red morocco-backed velvet-lined clam-shell box. The spine perished, and the sewing precarious at the front wrapper. Some chipping and peripheral loss to the wrappers. Generally tanned, minor staining along the fore-margins throughout. Bookplate of Ted Benttinen laid in at the front. Armorial bookplate of Clemens Platen-Hallermund to the recto of the front binder's blank. Joost Hartgerts as publisher-editor has brought together into a slim volume two abridged accounts of Dutch voyages from the turn of the XVIc. The first account is Olivier van Noort's wildly popular narrative of his global circumnavigation (see our example of second edition in French, published 1610) and the second details Jacob van Neck's voyage to the East Indies, establishing the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, VOC). The plates depict harbors and native people. Van Noort (1558-1627) was the first Dutch explorer to circumnavigate the globe. He set out in 1598 and completed the trip in 1601, establishing Dutch dominance in exploration. Van Noort was the commander of a fleet of four ships and navigated a route to the Indies by way of the Straits of Magellan. He coasted along Chile and Peru, then turned westward across the Pacific, finally returning to Rotterdam in August of 1601. He arrived back in Holland with only one battered ship and his crew vastly depleted. The published accounts sold well, with the first examples appearing less than a month after his return and later publications -- such as this one -- cropping up well into the XVIIc. Jacob Corneliszoon van Neck (1564-1638) came from a well-to-do Amsterdam family. In 1598, he was selected to lead a fleet of eight ships in the second Dutch voyage to Bantam (present-day Banten, Indonesia). Van Neck set out from Texel with the purpose of bringing back various spices to the Netherlands. His crew battled dysentery and weathered storms, but van Neck made his triumphant return to Amsterdam in 1599 after fourteen months at sea. Arriving with almost one million pounds of clove, pepper, cinnamon, mace, and nutmeg, crowds greeted him in the streets with fanfare and gifts. Like van Noort's, van Neck's account was published for decades after his home-coming, making this compilation a classic of Dutch golden-age exploration. Clemens Platen-Hallermund (1902-1983) was a member of a high noble (Hochadel) German family that dates to the Middle Ages. The line of Platen-Hallermund was raised to the rank of Imperial count by Leopold I in 1689. His library was kept at Schloss Weissenhaus in Schleswig-Holstein. Theodore "Ted" Benttinen (1948-2023) was an MIT-educated oceanographer and explorer who went to both poles on research missions. Benttinen amassed a formidable collection of books of exploration, particularly strong in Pacific voyages as well as in polar accounts. The present volume was lot 205 in the Sotheby's New York 9 December 2024 sale of his library. Alden & Landis 640/147; Sabin 5542; not in Landwehr. Catalogued by GR Murdock.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near fine. Second. THE LANDWEHR-FOSSETT-BENTTINEN COPY OF THE FIRST DUTCH CIRCUMNAVIGATION. Second edition in French. Amsterdam: Widow of Cornille Nicolas (Claeszoon), 1610. Folio in 4s (12 13/16" x 9 3/8", 322mm x 240mm). [Full collation available.] With 2 full-page engraved maps and 25 in-text engravings. Bound in modern half vellum over speckled boards. On the spine, author and date inked in manuscript. All edges of the text-block un-trimmed. Washed and pressed, with repairs (mostly marginal) to A1 and H4. Odd repairs, with a few small patches of facsimile in-fill. Bookplate of the "Steve Fossett Collection of Adventure & Exploration" to the front paste-down, with the book-label of John Landwehr below. Olivier van Noort (1558-1627) was the first Dutch explorer to circumnavigate the globe. A former innkeeper in Rotterdam, Van Noort was sponsored by a group of merchants seeking to increase imports and exports for the Netherlands. Van Noort's voyage advanced Dutch establishments in the East Indies, leading directly to the establishment of the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie, VOC). His account stands apart for its proto-ethnography; five engravings display the dress and tools of the various indigenous communities Van Noort encountered. The published accounts sold well, with the first copies appearing less than a month after his return. A more complete edition appeared later that year, followed by two amended editions in 1602. John Landwehr (1924-2015) was a Dutch bibliographer who wrote a monograph of Dutch books with colored plates published 1662-1875 as well as a general bibliography of VOC publications. Landwehr shaped his personal library through a fascination with Dutch natural history, travel and topography, and cultural costumes. James Stephen Fossett (1944-2007) was an American businessman, aviator, sailor, and adventurer. He was the first person to fly around the world in a balloon and in a fixed-wing aircraft. In total, Fossett held five world records for circumnavigation. The Steve Fossett Collection of Adventure and Exploration went to auction at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers (now Freeman's Hindman) in October, 2018, the present volume lot 145. Theodore "Ted" Benttinen (1948-2023), perhaps the purchaser at the Fossett sale, was an MIT-educated oceanographer and explorer who went to both poles on research missions. Benttinen amassed a formidable collection of books of exploration, particularly strong in Pacific voyages as well as in polar accounts. The present volume was lot 204 in the Sotheby's New York 9 December 2024 sale of his library. Alden & Landis 610/79; Borba de Moraes II:103; JCB3 II:71; Sabin 55438. Catalogued by GR Murdock.

Van Noort was the fourth to circumnavigate the globe and the first Dutchman to do so. His predecessors were Magellan, Drake and Cavendish. He left Holland in 1598 with four ships and orders to attack the Spanish and Portuguese and harass them in any way possible. After many adventures Van Noort returned in 1601 with only one ship and only a few dozen of his crew. Those few had survived numerous skirmishes with the Portuguese and Spanish, and attacks by natives at Puerto Deseada and Tierra del Fuego, the former described here as "zeer groot van gestalte" (very large in stature) leading to tales of giants. They suffered from scurvy and survived on penguin meat and ostrich eggs. Van Noort's story was extremely popular and as the first Dutchman to sail round the world he was revered out of national pride, even though his voyage accomplished little. With a 19th-century owner's name on an endleaf and an occasional word underlined.
