Want Emily Hobhouse was "'n engel van vertroosting . ons voorspraak voor die wêreld, die versorger van ons hongeriges, die heler van ons wonde ." (Dr. D. F. Malan). Dit was haar hand, "'n klein hand, die hand van 'n vrou" wat in die woorde van genl. Smuts na ons uitgesteek is. Wie was hierdie merkwaardige vrou? Ná die dood van haar vader vir wie: sy jare lank moes versorg en verpleeg, gaan sy onder die Cornwalliese mynwerkers in die Wilde Weste van Amerika werk. Hierdie ruwe manne leer spoedig om haar as 'n engel uit die hemel te beskou. Sy keer na Engeland terug en word 'n geesgenoot van familie en vriende wat sterk pro-Boers is. Berigte oor die haglike toestande in die konsentrasiekampe sypel deur. Emily besluit, te midde van sterk teenstand, om self ondersoek te kom instel. Weliswaar word sy net toegelaat om die konsentrasiekampe suid van Bloemfontein te besoek, maar vir hierdie vurige vegter vir reg en geregtigheid is dit voldoende. Haar verslag oor haar ondervindinge, haar briewe en haar toesprake veroorsaak 'n geweldige herrie. Toe sy in Oktober 1901 weer in Tafelbaai aankom, word sy toegang geweier en hardhandig na Engeland teruggestuur.
