Naast de Gentse universiteitsbibliotheek werkte architect Henry van de Velde in de jaren 1930 aan nog een ander belangrijk Oost-Vlaams ensemble: de Polikliniek voor Inwendige Ziekten en Villa Landing voor Dr. Adriaan Martens in Astene (Deinze). Als pio…nier specialist in inwendige ziekten en dieetleer was dokter Adriaan Martens destijds een bekend figuur in de medische en politieke wereld. Dr. Martens kocht het perceel van beeldhouwer George Minne, en gaf architect Henry van de Velde, kort na hun eerste ontmoeting in 1931 de opdracht voor het ontwerp van een woonhuis en een polikliniek aan weerszijden van de Emiel Clauslaan in Astene (Deinze). De bouwwerkzaamheden waren klaar in 1934, respectievelijk 1935. Hoewel beide gebouwen op het eerste gezicht van elkaar afwijken door de verschillende materialen, kunnen er toch enkele opvallende parallelen getrokken worden. Met hun plastische volumes, de grote afgeronde hoeken, typische baksteenoppervlaktes en goed uitgedachte integratie in het omgevende Leielandschap zijn zowel de kliniek als de villa typische exponenten van Henry van de Velde's tweede Belgische periode (1926-1948). Dit boek focust zowel op de originele materialen en kleurenschema's van de architect, maar ook op de interieurdecoratie en kunstcollectie in zowel de polikliniek en Villa Landing. Daarnaast wordt ook stilgestaan bij de erfgoedwaarde van beide gebouwen. 0 g.
