Presentation copy, inked inscription to head of title: 'From the Author' - a trifle shaved. The sole edition of a pamphlet by William Vanderstegen, published in vindication of his Observations on frauds practised in the collection of the salt duties, and the misconduct of officers fairly stated (Reading, 1793), in which he had levelled charges of corruption at the salt industry and trade. That publication prompted a brief pamphlet war, with merchant and member of the Thames Street Company of Salt Importers, Thomas Weston issuing a response refuting any allegations of misconduct. In this pamphlet, Vanderstegen politely, but firmly refuses to retract his statements, providing further evidence to bolster his charges, particularly with regard to profiteering from exorbitant duties. ESTC records copies at three locations in the British Isles (Cambridge, Morrab, and Oxford), and a further four in North America (Columbia, Free Library of Philadelphia, Harvard, and Huntington).
