Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. - This volume brings together several images, maps and plans to present the conservation plan for Chandigarh- Forms an invaluable resource for other similar structures of the Modern eraOne of the most ambitious developmental schemes planned on India's independence was the city planning of Chandigarh - a symbolic gesture towards the country's future. Designed by Pierre Jeanneret in 1962 to evoke a lotus flower afloat in a pond, Gandhi Bhawan - dedicated to the work of Mahatma Gandhi - is a testament to the culmination of modernism as an aesthetic, historic and inter-cultural movement in India. Situated within the Panjab University campus, Gandhi Bhawan was conceived by Jeanneret as a platform to present his principles of Indian modernism, its design influenced by Gandhian ideals and the pinwheel toys of local children. This volume, supported by a grant from the Getty Foundation's Keeping it Modern initiative, documents the thorough research and conservation planning effort for Gandhi Bhawan, including comprehensive testing of its innovative building materials. Its impact stretches beyond the university, as the conservation plan outlined here forms an invaluable resource for other buildings of the modern era. With several images, maps and plans, this publication hopes to make accessible the work of many architects, engineers, conservators and scholars, ensuring the preservation of this architectural gem and the hopeful vision it embodies. The City Palace at Udaipur is part of an exemplary living cultural heritage that has survived in an unbroken line of custodianship from medieval kingship to modern democracy. This volume traces the cultural lineage of the palace through its art and architecture to arrive at a conservation model to preserve this magnificent structure for the future. Beginning with the historical precedents that led to the selection of Udaipur as the new capital of Mewar State, the authors trace the evolution of the palace, its sequence of inner and outer chambers and the subsequent expansions, which added Mughal and British influences to its Mewar Rajput architecture. The authors, who are also conservation scholars, have outlined in this beautifully illustrated volume a master conservation plan that combines modern and traditional methods within the context of the history, condition and conservation needs of the City Palace Udaipur. With Forewords by Shriji Arvind Singh Mewar and Deborah Marrow, the Director of the Getty Foundation, this book is an invaluable record of an attempt to preserve one of India's greatest architectural gems. Shikha Jain is a founding member and Director of Preservation and Community Design at Development and Research Organisation for Nature, Arts and Heritage (DRONAH). She has extensive experience in heritage conservation and serves as a senior consultant with the Ministry of Culture, India. Vanicka Arora is a conservation architect and academic based in Gurgaon, India. With several years' experience working on heritage conservation at DRONAH, she is presently involved in several such projects in Rajasthan and Punjab.

Urban heritage of Asia and India is a very significant segment that has largely remained unaddressed for a long time. Recent recognition of Asian and Indian cities as living heritage in UN policies is a welcome change. This volume provides an overview of UN approach to Asia's urban heritage along with a wide perspective of national and regional approaches to urban conservation in a range of Asian countries. More specifically, it evaluates the recent focus on culture and development in Indian cities through national level schemes. The volume also outlines that while safeguarding of urban heritage as part of larger international and national agendas is critical; one also needs to look at the local approaches at ground level that finally determine the success of urban regeneration of historic areas. The contributors to this edited volume include a wide range of international and national experts specialising in heritage conservation and urban renewal in Asia, along with researchers focusing on historic cities. It is a useful reference for all practitioners and academicians working in the field of urban regeneration in Asia.
