A Riot of Color Printing: 1860s Bay Area Political Campaign EphemeraFactions Galore, "Grant Invincibles", Torchlight Processions, and Anti-Chinese FervorExtensive scrapbook of mid-nineteenth-century San Francisco politic. Small folio. Contemporary half calf and textured cloth (fine herringbone pattern) ledger book with approximately 70 items of printed ephemera plus period newspaper clippings reporting on local politics, all mounted on recto and verso of scrapbook leaves. Spine leather and corners rubbed. Typical age toning and occasional spotting. Generally very good. A Riot of Color Printing: 1860s Bay Area Political Campaign EphemeraFactions Galore, "Grant Invincibles", Torchlight Processions, and Anti-Chinese FervorExtensive scrapbook of mid-nineteenth-century San Francisco political ephemera, containing approximately seventy election tickets and related items, most produced by Bay Area job printers. Preserving the street-level machinery of American democracy in the years immediately following the Civil War, the collection documents municipal, state, and national contests through a remarkable assemblage of vividly colored party ballots, factional slates, campaign cards, speeches, theatrical programs, and civic printing. Together they capture the intense partisanship, shifting alliances, racial politics, and exuberant visual culture of California elections during Reconstruction. The tickets represent an extraordinary range of parties, factions, and independent movements, nearly all listing extensive slates of local candidates. Among them are a People s Ticket bearing a portrait of Abraham Lincoln; Union, Regular Republican, National Republican, Union Democratic, and Independent tickets; a Second Ward Union Republican ticket with a portrait of Ulysses S. Grant; and a spectacular presidential ticket depicting a locomotive marked Direct for the White House. Other highlights include a Democratic ticket for George B. McClellan; cards advertising excursions by the Grant Invincibles to San Jose and Vallejo; announcements of Grant Invincibles processions and gatherings at Maguire s Opera House, the Metropolitan Theatre, and the Alhambra Theatre; and an Independent Taxpayers Union slate for 1869.One especially notable ballot headed Independent Union and Anti Conness, nominates Romualdo Pacheco for state treasurer. Pacheco, a Californio Republican who had held that office since 1863, later became the first Hispanic American and first native Californian to serve as governor of California. He subsequently became the first Hispanic Member of the United States Congress to exercise full voting rights. Anti Conness identified opposition to the organization surrounding Senator John Conness. California s Union-Republicans had divided into bitter Short Hair and Long Hair factions over patronage, nominations, railroad influence, and control of party conventions. Although Conness s defense of Chinese immigration increasingly alienated white California voters, thus the anti-Conness designation on a Republican slate principally signaled resistance to his political machine and its preferred candidates. An equally striking Regular Democratic Ticket promotes Frank McCoppin for mayor of San Francisco above the bluntly exclusionary motto No Negro or Chinese Suffrage. The ticket embodies the racial appeals that helped revive California s Democratic Party in 1867. That year Democrat Henry H. Haight defeated Union-Republican George C. Gorham with approximately 54 percent of the vote, carrying most of the statewide Democratic slate with him. Haight s campaign combined opposition to Congressional Reconstruction and Black suffrage with warnings that Republican policies would eventually extend political rights to Chinese immigrants. The Democrats success also depended u. Book.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: vg. Album of Photographs Documenting the USS Champlain and the Recovery of Alan Shepard, Mercury-Redstone 3 Mission, May 1961 A remarkable photographic record compiled by crew member George Clay Whitt of the USS Champlain (C. Oblong quarto. Stiff card photo album, spiral bound. 92 original photographs mounted on recto and verso of album leaves. Mostly b&w (but about 9 color images) in various formats and sizes: 3 x 3 inches and 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches. Many of the images with printed identifying captions. A few of the photographs with bits of scotch tape residue from earlier album mounting. Overall condition is very good. Album of Photographs Documenting the USS Champlain and the Recovery of Alan Shepard, Mercury-Redstone 3 Mission, May 1961A remarkable photographic record compiled by crew member George Clay Whitt of the USS Champlain (CVS-39), documenting America s first manned space flight and the ship s role in recovering astronaut Alan Shepard and the Freedom 7 capsule following the historic Mercury-Redstone 3 mission on May 5, 1961. The album is notable for juxtaposing personal snapshots by Whitt (including several rare color views) with a more extensive series of professional photograph prints by government photographers. These latter were gifted to sailors on board the Champlain in lieu of returning confiscated images that government censors considered too sensitive for the general public. The Mercury-Redstone 3 mission marked a defining moment in the American space program: Alan Shepard became the first American in space, piloting Freedom 7 for a 15-minute suborbital flight that demonstrated the viability of human spaceflight and positioned the United States to compete directly with the Soviet Union in the emerging Space Race. President John F. Kennedy would announce the Apollo program s goal of landing a man on the moon less than three weeks later, making Shepard s flight a symbolic and technical turning point. The recovery of astronaut and capsule at sea was a crucial component of NASA s operational testing, entrusted to the aircraft carrier USS Champlain, which served as the designated prime recovery ship.Contents of the AlbumThe photographs begin with shipboard snapshots of Whitt himself as well as photographs of diplomas and medals awarded to Shepard in 1961. The first space related images come from Cape Canaveral, showing Shepard preparing the night before the mission, being assisted into his pressure suit, and scenes of the launch itself, including lift-off and several images from space. These early views set the stage for the principal focus of the album: the Champlain s recovery operations.A detailed sequence captures the carrier s preparations for the return, including clearing and readying the flight deck. Photographs then show a helicopter lifting off to retrieve Shepard and the Freedom 7 capsule from the Atlantic. Separate frames document Shepard being hoisted from the sea and the capsule being secured, followed by both being landed aboard the Champlain.Several color snapshots are noteworthy as they are clearly snapshots made by Whitt or a fellow sailor that had somehow cleared government censors. A series of candid images follows Shepard s movements aboard ship: his disembarkation from the helicopter, walk across the flight deck, arrival in sick bay, and the removal of his suit and biomedical instrumentation for medical examination. Additional photographs show his return to the flight deck, recovery of his helmet from the capsule, his meeting with reporters, and his eventual departure by helicopter from the carrier. The album concludes with images of the crew examining the Freedom 7 spacecraft. Particularly notable are views of the ship s executive officer climbing into the small capsule and posing inside, providing a rare perspective on the interior . Book.…

Aggiungi al carrelloNo Binding. Condizione: VG+. Detailed Manuscript Records of Sailors's Purchases and Cash Advances During 1840s Pacific Whaling Voyage on Pacific Whaler "Izaac Walton" Including Crew List & Division of Cargo "Kanaka" Pacific Islander Cr. Approximately 82 loose sheets with manuscript text plus numerous small manuscript slips. Some on blue paper. Overall condition is excellent, the leaves generally crisp and clean. Detailed Manuscript Records of Sailors's Purchases and Cash Advances During 1840s Pacific Whaling Voyage on Pacific Whaler "Izaac Walton" Including Crew List & Division of Cargo "Kanaka" Pacific Islander Crew Members A trove of over 80 manuscript ship documents from the New London whaler Izaak Walton, including the manuscript crew list and division of whale oil cargo, dated June 2, 1847. Several crewmembers were Pacific Islanders, likely Hawaiians, noted by the moniker "Kanaka" or "Canaca". The collection comprises original receipts issued on board the Izaak Walton for sailors' purchases from the ship's store, the so-called "slop chest". These receipts present itemized lists of clothing and sundries bought by common seaman directly from the Captain, including tobacco, whaleman's pumps, duck frocks, canvas trousers, "monkey" jackets, shirts (woolen and calico), various types of shoes (in one instance to a Mr. Edward Low: "1 pare of Women Showes"). Also noted are cash advances, particularly at Manila, undoubtedly requested as spending money for shore visits. The last two crewmembers listed in the "Division of Cargo" sheet are clearly Pacific Islanders (Jim Kanacker and John Kanacker). These two men are the only individuals on the crew list recorded as not entitled to a share of the whale oil cargo. Two other men (Henry N. Spencer and John Maloney) have their names crossed out, perhaps having deserted during the voyage. On mid-19th-century American whaleships there was no dedicated purser like one would find in the Navy. Instead, the slop chest (the shipboard store of clothes, boots, tobacco, sewing needles, etc.) was run by the captain, who shared any profit with the vessel s owners. He kept the chest under lock and key and entered the marked-up prices of every article in a small ledger that whalemen called the slop book or slop-chest account. In the case of the Izaak Walton, Captain Daniel Fitch simply kept loose paper receipts for each transaction. Crew members recoded in the various receipts: Edward Lowe, Harris Fowler, Solomon Perkins, Gilbert Comstock, Joseph Lothrop, William Lyman, Jacob Fowler, William H. Davis, John Dart, B.F. Austin, Henry Fuller, Henry F. Jones, Andrew Braman, Amos P. Lanphees, William Holt, Abner L. Rogers, William Wheeler, C.D. Dolbear, John Dolbear, Charles Merrells, George Brewster, William E. Cutting, George Slate, D.K. Hickok, Andrew Ludkin, George Howard, James McPhee, Charles W. Hillard, William A. Richardson, Jim Kanacker, John Kanacker, and others. Outstanding items: Division of Cargo to Crew of Ship Izaak Walton, June 2, 1847. [2] pages. Bifolium. Blue paper. Crew list, with breakdown of whale and sperm oil division, beginning with Captain Daniel Fitch's 1/16 share. "John Lewis Cornacker." 1845. Itemized receipt for numerous goods: 1 Guansey Frock, 1 Monkey Jacket, 1 Pair of Wolen Trousers, and more, totaling $53.20. With a cash advance of $5 at Manila. John Lewis (Cannacker). 1847. Settlement account, $109.33. New London, June 1847. Signed by John Lewis with an X: "His Mark" Jim Crow Cornaker. Itemized list of cash advances (including $5 at Manila), and purchases from the "slop chest" aboard the Izaac Walton: monkey jacket $6.00; 1 pair of "wolen trouser" 3.50; 2 pounds of tobacco 3.00, etc. Jim Cocoa (Cunacker) Coco Canaca $19.62 .
