The book is based on my personal experiences, gathered over decades of work as geotechnical engineer on construction sites in Austria and many other parts of the world, which I also use in my lectures at the Technical University of Graz, Austria. The method of stabilizing lands lides by short-circuit conductors has been developed by myself and has been patented in Germany and Italy. A number of publications already exists (see References) on this method, and of course I also deal in this book with its theoretical and practical aspects. Here I want to thank my assistants, Messrs. J. Dalmatiner, K. Eigenberger, E. Garber, H. Kienberger, R. Pötscher, and W. Prodinger, for working with me on various projects and for assisting me in the drafting of some chapters of this book, Mr. A. Trippl for preparing the illustrations, and my wife for many a Sunday worked through with me.

Es solI dies eine Vorbe reitung und HinfUhrung auf die im Kapitel 6 beschriebenen Methoden der Rutschungssanierung sein. Die Rutschungssanierung wird flit die PTojektanten immer wichtiger, weil man sich in zunehmendem Ma~e genotigt sieht, Bauwerke zu errichten und Verkehrswege anzulegen, in Gegenden, welche man bisher wegen ihrer Instabili tat gemieden hatte. Daraus ergibt sich auc~ die Notwendigkeit vorbeugender M~nahmen, urn auf rutschungsgeflihrdeten Gel1inden spatere Hangbewegungen und damit schwere Gefahren flit Leben und Gut der Bevolkerung zu verhindern. Vorauszuschicken ist noch, d~ sich die Formelzeichen bzw. die zeich nerische Darstellung von BodenaufschiUssen an die DIN-Normen halten. Siehe hierzu insbesondere DIN 1080, Teil6 und DIN 4023. 1.1. Begriffsbestimmung Rutschungen, speziell Hangrutschungen, sind schwerkraftsbedingte, manchmal durch die bodenverflUssigende Wirkung von Erdbeben hervorgerufene und sowohl nach abw1irts als nach au&n gerichtete Bewegungen von Boden massen; charakteristisch ist, d~ die quellfahigen Gesteine wie Ton, toniger Schluff und Mergel haufig von Haarrissen durchzogen sind; besonders sch1idlich kann sich das Auftreten eines Porenwasserdruckes auswirken. Die Rutschungen konnen sich in nicht geschichteten und homogenen Boden bilden, oder aber durch bestimmte Schichtlagerungen, also z. B. durch Sand-oder Tonzwischen lagen, herbeigeftihrt werden. Rutschungen konnen auch durch Oberlastung des Kopfes oder durch Unterschneiden des Fu~es ausgelost werden. Manchmal kann auch die Bodenstruktur schrittweise durch chemische und physikalische Vorg1inge geschwiicht werden.
