Part one only, without the Enchiridion de Epicteto Gentil, with evidence of an interesting cancellation on page 81 (leaf L1) featuring two letterpress slips: at the top the headline, page number, and title of the engraving; at the bottom five lines of verse, signature mark, and catchword; two separate slips of paper and pasted onto the sheet, with the engraving printed over the cancel slip at the top. Bound in handsome 20th century full Spanish calf. Leaves with scattered staining, tears, and occasional losses throughout. Sold as a collection of emblems.

One of the most famous books of emblems of the seventeenth century, designed and illustrated by the Flemish painter and art theorist Otto van Veen (1550-1629). First printed in quarto format in 1607. The Dutch verses are by A. Jansen van Ter Goes. Van Veen had studied for seven years under Federigo Zuccari at Rome. Settling in Antwerp in 1593, he began painting for the churches and public buildings, and for several years, from 1596 to 1600, numbered Rubens among his pupils. His work attracted the admiration and patronage of the Archduke Albert, who succeeded the Prince of Parma in the government of the Low Countries. He published three other emblem books, 'Amorum Emblemata' (1608), 'Amoris Divini Emblemata' (1615) and 'Emblemata Sive Sybola' (1624). Not in Mills College Check List or Riedel-Horatiana. First and only edition of one of the lesser-known emblem books by the Dutch painter and poet Otto Vaenius (1556-1629). It contains a diverse selection of emblems, which, according to the title, were meant for princes, clergymen, military men and others. Each emblem is accompanied by a motto in Latin above and short captions in Latin and French can be found on the accompanying letterpress pages.Today Vaenius is best known as a teacher of Peter Paul Rubens and for his role in the development of the genre of emblemata, in particular the love emblems. His Amorum Emblemata is "one of the most important Dutch emblematical works. It firmly established Vaenius as a leading emblematist after his glorious beginning with the famous moral-philosophical neo-stoic Emblemata Horatiana (1607)" (Van der Weij).Browned throughout with a few small spots. Attractive copy of a splendidly illustrated edition combining Otto Vaenius's Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata and Le Roy Sieur de Gomberville's La doctrine des Moeurs, tiree de la philosophie des Stoiques. Pierre Daret had made the emblems in De Gomberville's work based on Vaenius's, enlarging and slightly improving them after the latest fashion. The Brussels publisher had probably acquired Daret's plates, and used them again in the present edition, returning the authorship to Vaenius, while also retaining De Gomberville's instructive comments. In this perfect combination of Vaenius' educational emblems and Gomberville's moral doctrine based on stoic philosophers and explained for the instruction of youth, the quotations from Horace made into emblems became popular again.Slightly browned with some marginal thumbing. Contemporary vellum, paneled in blind with raised bands; (title thumb-soiled, worming to lower margins worst at final few quires; modern endpapers, hinges strengthened, upper joint cracked at head and foot, covers slightly bowed). Otto Vaenius was a painter, draughtsman, and humanist flourishing in Brussels in the late 16th and early 17th century. He is known for running a large studio in Antwerp, producing several emblem books, and for being Peter Paul Rubens's teacher from 1594 to 1598. Horatian emblem books were received with resounding enthusiasm in the early modern period. The large and complex symbolic images meant to relay the basic precepts of humanist morality and celebrate Horatian virtues in society. Copies of this book were pirated by authors in Holland, France, Spain, Italy and England. This 1612 reprint of the original 1607 publication may be such an edition with explanatory text printed in Spanish, Dutch, Italian and French in the lower portion of preceding page. Rare first edition of this famous emblem book by Dutch poet Anthoni Jansen, based on the Antwerp 1607 Latin text edition of Otto van Veen's enduringly popular Quinti Horatii Flacci Emblemata, illustrating the poems of Horace, with verses in Dutch, Latin, and French. This emblematical work by Van Veen constituted a significant development in the design and conceptualization of emblem books as well as the optimization of their didactic impact. By transposing the works of the Roman poet Horace into innovative images through prints of a high technical quality the work could be used for philosophical and moral meditation. Van Veen was a painter, draughtsman and humanist, primarily active in Antwerp and Brussels. He is known for his paintings of religious and mythological scenes, allegories and portraits, which he produced in his large workshop in Antwerp, where from 1594 or 1595 to 1598 he was amongst others the teacher of Peter Paul Rubens and proved himself influential as an educated humanist artist (doctor pictus) on Rubens. Copy restored from waterstaining; binding renewed, edges newly marbled.

Contemporary vellum, without stains or browning, good contemporary binding. Nice copy of an emblematical work which went through many editions, well into the 18th century. The first edition (1607) was published in Antwerp by Verdussen. 103 proverbs and quotations from the works of Horatius are each illustrated with a copper engraving. The text is in French, Latin, Italian and Dutch. The Dutch text in the original edition is by Bredero. In our edition this text has been reworked. (Praz pp. 523).
