The visual motifs are inspired… by the book owner s values, profession or personal interests, but the thematic content is conveyed on a symbol level: Laine s bookplates inherently possess the character of miniature artworks rather than illustations. Laine uses photographic printing processes both in his bookplates and other artistic works. His bookplates are black-and-white, sometimes accented with shades of bluish-grey or sepia. His compositions often combine disparate elements that dialogially evoke implicit narratives.
