Veil became "famous" in the Civil War for retrieving the body of General John Reynolds from the Gettysburg battlefield, who was the highest ranking officer killed in the battle. He receved a commission for that act and after the war went West to Arizona where he had a variety of adventures. He left the Army and became involved in a variety of activities, including dealing in and milling flour for settlers and for supplying Indian reservations, which is what this letter is about.
