Auf ähnliche Weise entfaltet die Bezeichnung 'Avantgarde' eine Reihe häufig widersprüchlicher Konnotationen. Für manche bedeutet die Avantgarde den radikalsten experimentellen Bruch der Künste und Literaturen mit den Darstellungs- und Erzählkonventionen des 19. Jahrhundert: Im frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhundert zeugen davon Avantgardebewegungen wie Futurismus, Expressionismus, Dada und Surrealismus, d.h. Strömungen, die als die 'heroische' Phase der Avantgarde bezeichnet werden können.
