Near contemporary limp vellum with thong ties, spine labeled CEBETIS THEB. TABULA; (spine lightly darkened; light dampstain in blank lower margin of opening leaves, intermittent browning with 10 leaves in the 300s quite browned, clean tear across the large plate, leaves in gathering S out of order; otherwise complete and good copy of this uncommon work). This copy was deaccessioned from Carnegie Library in Grove City College, PA (their embossed stamps and other collection evidence on title, pages 1, 150, 250, 350, 441, and endpapers). First edition of this ancient Greek moralistic work, the "Tablet" of Cebes, with the Latin translation and commentary by Dutch humanist Justus Velsius (15021582). The "Tablet" was first published with a basic Greek grammar by Aldine in 1502; it was a popular 16th century pedagogical text presenting the journey of human life as an allegory. In it, the virtues of piety and a studiousness, especially for the discipline of mathematics, were positioned against the dangers of temptation and other low points of human progress. The publication'slarge allegorical woodcut was produced by the German engraver David Kandel (ca. 1520ca. 1596) in 1547; this is the second state of two. His "Tabula Cebetis" is depicted as a labyrinthine walled enclosure teeming with people. Kandel's print, iconographically speaking, is symbolic of humanity's pursuit of self-knowledge moving toward an inner sanctum ideally, upheld by moral purity. The figures are thus personifications on a path representing all that can go wrong indulgence, waste, greed, flattery, and false wisdom, etc. or right perseverance, self-control, gentleness, wisdom, and truth, etc. Among others, the "Tabula Cebetis" subject was treated by Hans Holbein the Younger and engraved by Knackfuss in 1521. And although Cebes of Thebes, a pupil of Socrates, is credited as author in the title ofmany published "Tabulam," this remains uncertain. What is known, Justus Velsius wrote this lengthy commentary during the Reformation-era to elaborate on the religious controversies of his time. Rare. Jahrhundert von einem unbekannten Autor verfasst. Spätestens ab dem 2. Jahrhundert galt der Philosoph Kebes, der im späten 5. und frühen 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. gelebt hatte, als der Verfasser. Daher wird der anonyme Autor auch Pseudo-Kebes genannt. Der Titel bezieht sich auf ein Votivgemälde, das sich vor dem Tempel des Gottes Kronos befand und das menschliche Leben darstellte. Darüber unterhält sich in dem fiktiven Dialog ein alter Mann mit zwei Jünglingen. Die philosophischen Ansichten, die dabei geäußert werden, sind zu einem erheblichen Teil neupythagoreisch, doch ist auch stoischer und kynischer Einfluss erkennbar. Die erste Ausgabe wurde 1494 als Begleittext zur Grammatik des Konstantinos Laskaris bei Aldus Manutius in Venedig veröffentlicht.
