De oudste dateren uit het midden van de 19e eeuw - het begintijdperk van de fotografie, en de meest recente uit 1988. In dit werk van Nederlandse - of in Nederland verblijve…nde fotografen ligt de nadruk niet op het zo gedetailleerd mogelijk weergeven van gebouwde objecten als zodanig, maar op de esthetische kwaliteit van de foto's als kunstuiting. Belangrijk is steeds het creëren van een bepaalde sfeer door middel van een spel van licht en donker, waarmee uiteraard de gebouwde omgeving ook zeer goed gekarakteriseerd kan worden. In een inleiding wordt de ontwikkeling geschetst van de fotografie en in het bijzonder van de tot een specialisme uitgegroeide architectuurfotografie en worden de belangrijkste architectuurfotografen genoemd. Het vereenvoudigen van de fotografische technieken leidde tot massaproductie, commercialisering en vervlakking. De kunstenaars-fotografen verzetten zich tegen de devaluatie van het artistiek niveau en bleven zelf streven naar een hoge artistieke kwaliteit. De afgebeelde foto's zijn hiervan steeds voorbeelden.
