Cloth. Condizione: Good. A richly illustrated panorama of Paris, with 204 finely engraved views after Augustus Pugin, accompanied by descriptive topographical text by Ventouillac. In the publisher"s original cloth binding, two volumes bound as one. This copy is undated. Dated here using Jisc, from copies held at various institut…ions including The London Library, Victoria and Albert Museum Libraries, and University of Bristol Libraries. A lovely volume consisting of 204 engraved views of Paris, accompanied by descriptive passages. The detailed engravings are the work of Augustus Pugin, an Anglo-French artist, draughtsman and writer on medieval architecture. Whilst Pugin was born in Paris, he left France during the Revolution and spent most of his life in England, thus able to straddle the divide between an insiders and outsiders depiction of the French capitol. The topographical and historical descriptive passages accompanying Pugin's engravings were written by L.T. Ventouillac. In the publisher"s original cloth binding. Externally, a little worn. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities resulting in slight loss to cloth. Spine ends pulled, with slight loss. Splitting to cloth at joints with backstrip slightly lifting with one or two closed tears. Slight rubbing to boards with one or two minor handling marks. Hinges strained with chipping to endpapers at gutter, but holding firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. Previous owner"s contemporary ink inscription to verso of frontispiece, dated 1844. Pages bright and clean if slightly age toned with the odd spot and handling mark, heavier to fore edge and first and last few leaves. Good. Augustus Pugin (illustratore). book.
