Si distingue ben presto per i suoi studi di ottica, di fisiognomica e di magia naturale, raggiungendo risultati di gran pregio anche sul versante del teatro. In un passo del "Del senso delle cose e della magia", rievocando i termini di una pubblica disputa con Della Porta, Tommaso Campanella (1568-1639) rivolge al filosofo campano una critica assai dura, accusandolo di essersi approcciato al mondo naturale e ai suoi 'segreti' con metodo meramente descrittivo.
