Octavo, original pictorial mauve cloth. First edition. Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909) was an important contributor to the development of the American short story, the originator of the type of story later known as "Stocktonesque." Cloth lightly rubbed at spine ends, some soiling to cloth, a very good copy.(#113554).

Hardback. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. Boston, J. Stilman Smith, 1895. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A fine copy. Three important things of note with this book. Firstly, the book's inscribed by the author. Secondly, the condition is fantastic. The book's in it's jacket which is fine, with trivial tanning to the spine and a 2mm tear to the lower edge of the jacket. Finally, there's a case for the importance of this book. The story was first published in 1881 in Harper's and involves travelling back in time to alter events in the future. The method of time travel is not mechanical, as in Wells' book, so doesn't carry the weight of that book in its place in the sf canon. Rather, the protagonist just operates beyond the restraints of time and space. This is little different to supernatural methods or dream-based backward time travel of earlier books. That said, I know of only a few earlier stories in English where the altering of historic events have future rammifications. Hawthorne's 'P's Correspondence' deals with literary lives, with Byron dying later for example; the time line is attributed to madness however, or at least an alternative reality. The rammifications of the time travel in Disraeli's Tale of Alroy don't seem to be as obvious though, and it may even be argued that the story is a secret rather than alternative history. In the present book, Joseph is not sold into Egyptian slavery and the Phoenicians thus take over the the Mediterranean. I wouldn't like to suggest that this is the earliest story of alternative history, but it's one of the earliest in the English language, and this is the first book edition of that story. And it's in a 19th century dust jacket, and inscribed. So, there you go. [10151, Hyraxia Books]. Signed by Author(s).

First edition. Octavo, cloth. Inscribed and signed by Bleiler on the front free end paper. An extensive revision and enlargement of the 1948 checklist recording about 5600 titles. For this edition, Bleiler eliminated some 600 marginal works and added more than 1150 titles overlooked during the compilation of the 1948 edition. Bleiler re-examined each retained title for accuracy of bibliographical data and supplied first edition citations for most books. While a few juveniles, plays, poetry, and important early works of adult fiction are included, "the fundamental purpose of this bibliography is to provide first edition and subject matter information on adult, English-language fantastic fiction (including translations) from 1800 to 1948." An essential source of bibliographical information for books published during this period. [Reference: Anatomy of Wonder (1995) 7-1. Barron (ed), Fantasy Literature 6-1. Corners bruised, a nearly fine copy in a very good or better dust jacket with slight wear to the corners, head of spine panel and small closed tear to upper right front panel. (31632).

Wessman, Harold E(verett) (1899-1989) and William A. Rose. Aerial Bombardment Protection. MIMEOGRAPH New York University, College of Engineering (I assume). (No publisher or publication data listed.) Provenance: Library of Congress, rubber stamped received 28 April 1942. There are NO copies found in WorldCat. Printed no later than April 1942. Condition notes: this is a FAIR copy at best, with some problems around the edges of the text. The work is staple-bound in a very weak spot so it is easy to disengage the leaves fro the staples, which has happened here in a number of places. That said, this is a rare item, and it exists. There you have it. Sections 1-14, 41pp, plus 12 plates (one folding), with 11 plates of tables and figures. (ii), 41[[, 12 "plates" (tables), including a folding schematic of bombs striking a skyscraper. Mimeographed from the typed originals. Printed on 11"x 8.5" sheets. Pp 1-41 contain sections 1-14. Pp 59-72 contains just section 19 (Air Raid Shelters). Presumably this lacks pp 41-58 sections 15-18. The sections include the following topics: 1-2, overview; 3, the new problem of design; 4 energy characteristics of structural materials; 5, bomb types and classifications; 6, effects of explosions; 7, designing for impact of direct hits; 8, designing for energy loads; 9, vibration of structures in relation to explosion effects; 10, blast, shock, fragmentation; 11, design of wall panels to resist blast; 12, conclusions from foreign pictures of damage from bombing; 13, special features. Section 19: air raid shelters, complete in itself, pp 59-72.
