Vermeyden was known for stage acts combining sleight-of-hand, paper cutting (découpures), and shadow play, a crossover between conjuring and visual art. His "Paperman" persona specialized in creating intricate paper figures on stage in front of the audience, which he would animate or transform by folding, tearing, and refolding them ? hence the subtitle Découpures Magiques du Papier ("Magical Paper Cuttings"). He sometimes performed for children's theatres and cultural societies, and self-published small brochures and pamphlets explaining his art. Very few of these survive; copies are known in Belgian and Dutch private collections and occasionally appear in the antiquarian trade, typically as artist's books or curiosities related to magie blanche (parlor magic) and arts du papier.
