Hetty Verolme, 1944 zusammen mit ihren Eltern deportiert,…lässt in ihrem Buch eine der bemerkenswertesten, weitgehend unerzählten Geschichten des Holocaust wieder aufleben: den ungewöhnlichen Kampf einer Gruppe von Kindern gegen ihre Vernichtung im Konzentrationslager Bergen-Belsen. Ende des Jahres 1943 werden Hetty Werkendam, ihre beiden Brüder Max und Jackie sowie ihre Eltern bei einer nächtlichen Razzia in Amsterdam aufgegriffen und später ins Konzentrationslager Bergen-Belsen deportiert. Zuerst bleibt ihre Familie noch zusammen, doch dann werden ihr Vater und ihre Mutter, zusammen mit anderen Eltern unter den Augen der Kinder auf einen Transport mit unbekanntem Ziel geschickt. Zurück im Lager Bergen-Belsen bleiben etwa vierzig Kinder, zwischen 10 Monate und 16 Jahre alt. Von den anderen als "Ersatzmutter" akzeptiert, organisiert Hetty zusammen mit anderen Kindern und einer polnischen Aufseherin den Überlebenskampf der Gruppe. Ihren Überlebenskampf in Bergen-Belsen notierte die Autorin des erste Mal wenige Tage nach der Befreiung des Lagers auf Wunsch der britischen Armee. Nach und nach entstand dann auf der Grundlage dieser Niederschrift das vorliegende Buch, das im Jahr 2000 zuerst in Australien erschien und ein Jahr später in den Niederlanden. Zur Zeit entsteht auf der Grundlage des Buches, das mittlerweile auch in England erschienen ist, ein Drehbuch als Vorlage für eine Verfilmung.
