Es wurde zwischen 1416 und 1434 von sechs Bildhauern geschaffen, darunter auch Donatello. Sein Putto war einst Teil des Taufbeckens, fehlte in Siena jedoch schon seit Jahrhunderten, bevor er 1902 von Wilhelm Bode für die Skulpturensammlung erworben wurde. Bode war es auch, der rund 25 Jahre zuvor die Abformung von über hundert Renaissanceskulpturen in Italien in die Wege leitete. Seit jener Zeit verfügt die Skulpturensammlung über eine heute in Vergessenheit geratene Abgusssammlung, während in der Gipsformerei bis zum heutigen Tag die historischen Gussformen und Modelle im Einsatz sind. In Fotografien von Fabian Fröhlich und fünf Textbeiträgen von Aurelia Badde, Eckart Marchand, Ricardo Mendonça, Neville Rowley und Veronika Tocha wird in diesem Buch das Gipsmodell des Taufbeckens umfassend gewürdigt und weiterführend kontextualisiert.
