V pp, (6)-200pp. Sole edition of this scarce example of the development of French Revolutionary medicine outside Paris. While medical historians often point to the seminal discoveries of men like Fourcroy, Corvisart and Laennec in the capital during this period, the ancient and historically more important faculty at Montpellier also remained fully functional during the Revolution. At the behest of the Committee for Public Education, Broussonnet was elected Professor at the Montpellier 'School of Health' (as it was renamed) in 1795, eventually rising to become Dean of the faculty. The present work reflects the turn-of-the -19th century obsession with semeiology, or the scientific reading of the 'signs' of a disease, but is also concerned, oddly enough, with astrological and meteorological influences on illnesses, devoting entire chapters to the effects of stars, comets and weather. Broussonnet compares the unknown means by which these astrological factors can influence disease to the mysterious forces described by Kepler and Newton which attract two bodies to one another. Hailing the 'genius' of fellow Revolutionary scientist Lavoisier, Broussonnet views the latter's celebrated decomposition of the elements as additional proof of the mysterious nature of such matters. Jean-Louis Victor Broussonet (1771-1846) belonged to a family of Montpellier physicians, including his father and older brother (Pierre Auguste Marie, also famous as a botanist). While managing to weather the Revolution, the Bourbon restoration seems to have landed him in trouble later on; he was arrested by the Committee for Public Education and forced to resign as doyen in 1819.
