Intéressant ensemble de documents autour du conflit qui opposa André-Charles Coppier à l'éditeur Firmin-Didot après la parution de la troisième édition de ses "Eaux-fortes authentiques de Rembrandt", ouvrage dont il assura également également la direction artistique. Choqué de voir que l'éditeur avait publié, après le tirage des exemplaires de luxe, un bulletin de souscription annonçant des tirages inférieurs aux chiffres définis par contrat et à ceux effectivement tirés, Coppier demanda à l'éditeur d'insérer un rectificatif à la justification, principe accepté par Firmin-Didot mais qui, pour une histoire d'exemplaires de passe et d'exemplaires tirés en héliogravure, dégénéra en un conflit qui fut soumis à l'arbitrage du tribunal de commerce de la Seine. L'arbitre, Paul Deloffre, soumit donc, début 1932, une série de questions, émanant tant de Coppier que de Firmin-Didot, à la sagacité de plusieurs institutions, parmi lesquelles la Société des Amis des Livres, dont Victor Mercier, éminent bibliophile et alors président honoraire à la Cour de Cassation, se trouvait président après le décès de Henri Beraldi. Après un rendez-vous avec Coppier et deux relances de celui-ci, le "Président Mercier" sollicita l'avis des sociétaires de la Société des Amis des Livres ainsi que du libraire de la Société, Léopold Carteret, lequel était également son fournisseur favori de livres rares, avant de livrer sa longue réponse au juge-arbitre. Carteret consacrera plus tard deux pages à Victor Mercier ("parfait magistrat" et "grand biliophile") dans son "Trésor du Bibliophile" (I, pp. 48-50). Certains documents, et notamment le manuscrit de Carteret, sont rongés dans les marges.
