L'impression typographique est due à l'Imprimerie Louis Jeanrot. Le frontispice sort des presses de Roger Lacourière. Une épreuve du burin tirée à part sur Chine accompagne les exemplaires de 1 à 17. Notre exemplaire est bien accompagné du burin de Roger VIEILLARD, sur pleine page et suivant la page du frontispice, avec une feuille flottante de protection. Les pages sont partiellement coupées. Couverture souple, lettrage en noir et en rouge, habillée d'un papier pergamine de protection. Etat : très bon, état d'ancienneté. Gravure : très bon. Traduction selon le rythme par Paul-Louis Couchoud (1879-1959). Justification : tirage de 3oo exemplaires, ici un des 230 exemplaires sur papier vélin blanc crève coeur des Papeteries du Marais avec un tirage en noir des 6 burins sur papier vélin blanc des Papeteries de Lana, numérotés de 71 à 300 ; notre exemplaire étant justifié par le numéro 183. Couverture souple, rempliée, lettrage sur le plat, rhodoïd translucide de protection. Sous chemise cartonnée rigide, lettrage doré sur le dos. Emboîtement cartonné rigide assorti. Édition tirée à 125 exemplaires sur vélin blanc à la forme des papeteries de Rives, illustrée de 14 compositions gravées au burin dans le texte par Roger VIEILLARD (1907-1989). Exemplaire nominatif imprimé spécialement pour Monsieur Georges WENDLING, bibliophile. Exemplaire enrichi de deux suite des burins, l'une en premier état, l'autre dans l'état définitif, toutes deux tirées sur papier Japon ultra fin. Toutes les gravures des suites sont paraphées par l'artiste. La gravure à l'amphore du menu est bien présente dans les suites, et les deux exemplaires sont signées au crayon par l'artiste. He has delayed replying to Ede's letter as he has had to take time to see what he has to offer him. The researches have been more difficult than he expected because of the nature of 'la litterature classique fran…çais': 'très petit nombre de romans (romans de Voltaire, l'abbé Prévost, Choderlos de Laclos, ou Rousseau) sont tres peu intéressants a illustrer, de moins pour moi. Dans la litterature romantique je ne trouve pas beaucoup plus de ressources'. He asks if it is essential that 'l'original du texte soit français?', and gives two suggestions if not, with comments on both choices. The first is Ecclesiastes, for which he has already prepared a series of illustrations; and the second 'Les voyages d'Ulysse', for which he could produce 'quelquechose de tres joli' centred on three episodes. He gives a further three suggestions if it is absolutely vital that the text to be illustrated be in French, again accompanied by comments: Baudelaire's 'Spleen de Paris', Balzac's 'Seraphita' and Voltaire's 'La Princesse de Babylone'. The letter concludes: 'Je crois que vous avez raison de vouloir deblayer le terrain avant votre voyage à Paris'.
